Speedtouch 510v4 noise

Had cause to turn off my 510 router last night for the first time in months. Now when it has power going into it, it is making a high pitched electrical whistle

Didn`t have a chance to investigate it last night (although it does appear to connect as it should) so it is currently off and unplugged.

Not knowing anything about electrics, can anyone suggest whether this is, a terminal issue, or what could be wrong?

Can't say for sure, because I can't hear it.

If you pick the unit up and turn it over while it's running, does the whining pitch change?

A wild guess, but I would say that it's the coils of an inductor which have dried out or come loose. It's called Magnetostriction. If it is that, it's more annoying than serious.

Sounds like a return for repair.

I've got used to it on mine, probably been doing it for 2 years now. If you listen really carefully when it is syncing it is like an old dial up modem whilst it was connecting but really speeded up After syncing it is just a low noise whine I hear.

Obviously it might be something more than just an annoyance so suggest sending it back for repair/replacement if under warranty or at least get it checked out by someone who can actually look at it / hear it and give it the all clear or not.

In addition to my previous two replies if it isn't in warranty anymore the prices of routers have fallen drastically over the years so it may be cheaper/safer to just buy a new router than getting someone to actually try to repair your current one or risking using the current one.

Yup its doing this noise stops when synced. Probably change it in the next little while "just in case"
