First time set-up of 3com Router

[link to this post]

I've just gone live with Newnet Broadbnd and am trying to set-up a 3com OfficeConnect Wireless Router - 3CRWDR101A-75

I've connected all the cables and have the following lights;

Power
Sync
WLAN
LAN Status

Section 4 of the instructions, Running The Setup Wizard says open the Web Browser (IE7) and connect to the Router by typing the URL http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar.

When I do that, the Dial-Up Connection Box comes up. I assume that's not supposed to happen, so what do I do next ?

change your browser / PC settings to not dial a connection - Tools / Internet Options / Connections - never dial a connection

Thanks Phil, I'm up and running now.

Why don't the instructions tell you to change the connection settings. Do they think everyone's had a broadband connection previously !

Anyway, thanks again.

This review will help you http://www.thinkbroadband.com/hardware/reviews/2004/q4/3com-g72.html

One thing that may cause a problem when moving over from a dial-up connection is Internet Explorer (IE) trying to dial your existing dial-up service. To avoid this, in the Internet Options for IE, select the 'never dial a connection' option.

A useful tip: Create a Favorites folder named: ADSL Modem Login-out-------------------3Com
Then save the 3Com

Thanks E7er. I'll have a look at that.

When I configured the Router, I switched Windows Firewall off. As the router has its own Firewall, is it best to leave the Windows Firewall off permanently ?

Oh! Should have mentioned that I'm the OP. Only just realised I wasn't logged on when I originally posted.

Hi 1stTimer, I have Windows firewall turned ON, but my main defence is the routers powerful SPI (stateful packet inspection) firewall. In addition, I have Windows Pop-up blocker turned ON, which can be a little annoying at times having to sanction pages, but is well worth it to keep out the Internet nasties and it gives more control on websites.

Useful tip.
Have you noted when you go to the 3Com website for info or firmware for your router, you only paste in the model number 3CRWDR101A-75 to find the locations.
