Good half-bridge router

[link to this post]

Hi,

I'm fed up with my current router - it keeps freezing due to P2P traffic and my housemate's streaming video - too many connections!

I'm looking for a router that has a "half-bridge" mode - i.e. it will terminate the PPPoA connection at the router, and pass PPPoE traffic through - so that the PPP connection is terminated on a linux box (or it could be another router with a WAN port) with more memory (more connections) and other clever traffic management tricks. It must work with my MaxDSL connection, so should be fairly new.

The problem is that in other parts of the world that use ADSL, PPPoE is used through and through - obviously this would be no problem. Here in the UK we use PPPoA, so this narrows the selection of routers quite a bit. Another problem is that the term "half-bridge" is not always used; sometimes it is just "bridge" (but what kind?).

Has anybody here had exprience with a router that can do the kind of half-bridging that I want, and do it well?

I appreciate and look forward to your responses!
