Spoke too soon. Soon after my last post the Internet light went out (DSL light still on) and it refused to connect even after a reboot. Now back on my BT Voyager which is working OK.

Time the 585 went back to the shop I think.

Any ideas for a replacement suitable for long lines ?

Are you 100% certain it's not an ISP initiated disconnect?. IIRC Plusnet had an idle time out on certain products, to free up sessions.

I would be surprised if my ISP, IDNET initiated a disconnect but whatever causes the disconnect, the problem is that it is often impossible to get it to reconnect even with a reboot. But if I plug in my BT Voyager 205 it works straight away. My line is marginal but the Voyager seems to cope OK and I purchased the 585 on the basis that it was supposed to work well with long lines.

I would have to agree with the factory reset thing.
I am stuck on 6.1.4.3 so I can tweak the snr as I'm not prepared to lose this feature with the later firmwares.
Anyway, I had this problem many many months ago until I read try doing a full factory reset back to scratch, then dont fiddle with anything except snr if required.
Mine stays up for weeks at a time and only dies when the snr goes very low for whatever reason (passing aliens or summit!!)

Its true, it will be fine for weeks then all of a sudden it will fall through the floor, only for 10 maybe 20mins, its probably the women next door and her 'special toys', or it could be the misses and hers !!

I have just had that happen to me for the first time.

It took me about 10 minutes to get online again but miraculously my PPP session hasn't dropped as it still shows the uptime that I had before i.e. the uptime wasn't reset


I wonder if there's a router setting somewhere to stop this happening?

I'm running on the 6.1.4.3 firmware.

IDnet's connections have been dropping as i can vouch, also see their forum.

So maybe that new firmware was doing it's job after all.

so far this hasnt happened to me once.

does your line have any traffic going over it when idle?

I have irc/msn/ssh connected at all times which could be why I dont get this problem.
