Is my router up to the task?

I've currently got a 585(i)v6 running firmware 6.1.4.3.

What I've hanging off it are 4 PC's, 1 XBox 360, 1 VoIP ATA and 2 network hubs.

Every now and again, my connection comes to a halt and I'm not sure if it's my ISP (Entanet) or the router.

For example, it was happening this evening when:

3 PC's online, 1 XBox 360, 1 VoIP ATA. 2 PC's are carrying out general browsing, whilst 1 is running a mail server and at the time, had 16 newsgroup connections open, albeit limited to 0.5MB.

Is all this too much for the router, or could it be something else?

I wouldn't think so, i am about to buy that router as alot of people on these forums have recommended it highly, all i can think of is maybe its a configuration error somewhere, cant really help much more than that until i've got my router to play with.


EDIT: the router i am about to buy isn't the (i) version so maybe this isn't the same as the ST585 v6 as i was told not to buy the (i) version.

I'd ask your ISP to look at your session logs. They should be able to tell you when your PPP sessions start and end. Entanet have a habit of kicking users every now and then to help with balancing the load out, which could be it...

Of the list of things you mentioned this evening that were in use/connected, I don't see a reason why any of them would cause a problem. 16 (why 16?!) NNTP connections wouldn't be a problem, even web browsing would be harsher on a router than 16 constant TCP connections. Something like BitTorrent may cause problems with some routers, don't know about the ST585.

But I'd look into your connection status, both PPP and line sync, to see if either are dropping...
