Cisco 2600 router and 2950 Switch on uk adsl

[link to this post]

Hi,
I have just got a Cisco 2600 with 1 ISDN BRI U and a Serial wic card.
Also I have Cisco 2950 switch.

My question is could I use these for my home ADSL setup in the UK and remove my netgear ADSL wireless router?
Would I need some kind if DSL wic card for the 2600?

Thanks for any help

You would need a WIC1-ADSL which can be picked up fairly cheaply on eBay.

Do you know IOS?

So the next step is to find the card!

To be honest, I wouldn't waste your money on an ADSL WIC. Just buy an Ethernet ADSL modem/router and use that to front-end your 2600. If your 2600 only has 1 Ethernet port, then you could combine it with your 2960 by using VLANs to create the "inside" and "outside" connections on the router.

That said, you indicated that you did not know IOS, so your on a steep learning curve already!

Just buy a modem/router from someone like Linksys (owned by Cisco), and have an easy life, until you have learnt enough about Cisco IOS.

The cheap modem/router may well have as much grunt as the Cisco anyway, depending on the exact model of 2600 you have got. And the 2600 is probably unsupported by Cisco now.

At least the 2950 is a worthwhile switch, and still supported.

Vyzar.

Guys, Thanks for the advice.

I think I will just connect the 2950 to my Netgear ADSL router and see what happens. I have downloaded the Cisco Network Assistant, installed it and looked at the 2950. I know its not IOS but its a start ;-)

Cheers

Dependent on the 2600 model it's either end of sales or end of support...not that this should make much difference unless you want a maintenance contract.

Most of the 2950 series switches are now end of sales as well.
