I wonder if anyone can help with a frustrating failure to access the Internet through a Speedtouch 585 v. 6 router using a laptop with Windows Vista? I see there was a message earlier this year in this forum on a similar topic, but no reply, so I hope that this time someone has an answer!
The story so far:
The Vista laptop, which belongs to a family member, connects to the Internet using the ISP's USB modem and also using an old D-Link DSL-504 wired router that I lent them.
They wanted the advantages of wireless access, so I recommended the Speedtouch 585, since I've used one happily for several months - and I bought it for them. This has unfortunately proved to be something of a white elephant as it won't work with the shiny new laptop.
The router connects correctly and I can access the Internet using my own laptop, with Windows XP, either using an Ethernet cable or wireless access (I left access open to make connection straightforward). So far so good.
The Vista laptop refuses to connect to the Internet either by wire or wirelessly. It will see the router, it identifies it correctly by name and ID and I can use the Vista laptop to log into the router's web interface. Vista's diagnostic routine tells me it has local network connection but no Internet access.
No matter how many times I do 'ipconfig /release' and 'ipconfig /renew' and re-boot the machine, it will get no further. As I've no other experience of Vista at any other time, at first I thought it was some security setting - but if it is, I can't find the solution.
The nearest I can get to a diagnosis from Vista is the message that comes when I ask it to tell me why the connection to the Internet is marked by a red cross in the graphical representation: 'There may be a problem with your DNS configuration.' Searching a bit further by following a link to the Microsoft site, I found Microsoft KB 928233: 'Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers'. This does not identify particular models of router - does anyone know if this is the problem, and if so, how to cure it? The Microsoft article talks in rather scary terms about modifying the registry, which I'm reluctant to do, as a not very technical person, to someone else's machine!
The router has a fairly up-to-date version of the software: about 6.1, I think, if that makes any difference, and the Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pi 1505 laptop uses Windows Vista Home Premium. I have checked on the Fujitsu site and the latest wireless card driver seems already to be installed.
Any help will be much appreciated.
