speedtouch 585v6 and reboots

[link to this post]

I think I remember reading stuff about 585s rebooting themselves I wonder those who it happened to were they using the lan to transfer large files at the time?

I cannot remember the last time if ever my 585 rebooted itself before today, but today I transferred 3 gigabyte sized files over my lan and a few seconds after the last one finished my lan disconnected and I noticed my router rebooted itself.

I found there was no particular activity that would result in a reboot and seeing "Kernel Warm Restart" in the logs. As it happens I've just tried re-flashing the 6.1.4.3 firmware as someone on here recommended that [re-flashing] as a solution to the random reboots.

I am on 6.2.29.2, I am not going to be changing firmware (yet) as this is the first spontaneous reboot I have had, I will probably stress test my lan again sometime soon tho to see if its repeatable.

I'm using the 6.1.4.3 firmware and I've never had a reboot problem only the 'Disconnected because idle timeout reached ...' problem which hasn't happened for ages (touchwood)

The idle timeout problem used to occur randomly and not necessarily when I was downloading large amounts of data - I'm not a heavy user in any case (I know that the idle timeout problem is different to your reboot problem BTW)

yep is different, on this the entire reboot basically did the same as if you turned it off and on again. I have since downgraded it to 6.1.4.3 tho (to aid with adsl2 testing) and even changed router at least for a while.

I recently hit the timeout problem with 6.1.4.3 and the router wouldn't reset even after a reboot. I think it was caused by the fact that at the time I was seeing a lot of noise in the upstream frequencies (noise margin 6dB synch 256kbps) so I wonder if it is something to do with the router sending a keep alive signal and then not getting the response quick enough.

I had another "Warm Kernel Restart" yesterday, so re-flashing the 6.1.4.3 firmware doesn't appear to have had a positive effect.

Hi

SpeedTouch's are known for rebooting, a combination of poor ventilation so they run hot and not so good firmware.

The only time SpeedTouch's were really rock solid was in the days they were owned by Alcatel, anyone remember the 510v4? Now Thomson Mulitmedia just continue the brand name and not the quality. Just look at the little effort put into drawing the ticks and crosses for that awful user interface (they probably couldn't use the very much better user interface from the Alcatel days without paying a license for it), looks like the graphics were done by a 6 year old using MS Paint, and this lack of care or quality follows through the whole thing.

There should be no reason why consumer grade routers reboot spontaneously these days, especially those by Broadcom based on the Broadcom software stack in turn based on embedded Linux, unless of course like Thomson have they've ruined it with their clunky user interface and their own OS on top of it all.

Regards

Phil

Well, mine runs fine :P
Time Since Power-on: 42 days, 9:59:32

But yes some firmware versions are quite buggy, especially 5.3.x - 6.1.x.

Yes they can run hot, but they are designed to run hot. Most restarts are due to firmware bugs.

also if they were really just trying to take the easiest approach, they would just use the standard broadcom firmware. but there are plenty of alternatives available already if that is really what you want.
