O2 router, user accounts & control

[link to this post]

hi,

Iv just changed my isp from aol to o2 and after a little messing around iv got all set up, just something is bothering me.

Im using the o2 wireless box II, I wanted to use my netgear but couldnt get it to connect but thats another story, now when i accessed the O2 box the first thing I wanted to do was to change my password from the default, i changed my pw but I noticed that I can only login to it as admin, I cant create any other users or change my user-type. I also noticed that the router can be accessed from the WAN because the peeps at o2 did a reset on it & i believe they said they changed some settings whilst I was on the phone to them. I was wondering how I take full control of this router, make new user accounts for it and how I stop it from being able to be accessed from outside my LAN.

i noticed this exact same this in another router i got from aol not so long ago but i dont use that router so it didnt bother me.

It's simplest to use your own router.

yea i would agree with you entirely , i would much prefer to use my tried and trusted Netgear dg834g but i couldn't get passed the CHAP handshaking authentication protocol i have got my username from the o2 router and i rang up o2 and got the pw.

im on a non-LLU so using BT at exchange

the settings i could find on the net and from calling o2 so far are:

username: ******@o2broadband.co.uk
pw : ************* random upper and lower case letters mix with numbers
using: PPPoA
VC-BASED
VCI 0
VPI 38
NAT enabled

iv only had a quick look at getting it to work but was guna have a closer look anyhow so any suggestions or help would be great.

but whats with the supplied O2 router, why cant i even make another user account? and who has control over the root acc?

I had forgotten that O2 also do non-LLU. If CHAP fails that suggests that either the password or username have been entered incorrectly. Could you get O2 to e-mail them to you so you could be sure about case and ambiguous characters? You could then cut/paste them into your router configuration settings.

I'm not with O2 so can't comment on admin accounts etc. Have you tried the O2 forum on this site?

yea thats a good idea to have the details emailed , and i haven't asked on the o2 forum cos iv seen this kinda thing before [on an aol router] and can only assume that its not far from standard for free routers from various isp`s
