new router

[link to this post]

hi

iam thinking of getting a new router,atm i have a netgear dg834g v3 and a billion 5200gr4,

the netgear gives me a lower throuput over the billion about 1500kbs

so has these routers are ageing a tad i thought about asking you guys on wot is the best way to go on a new router,

i snyc at about 6mb with the billion with and atten rate of 53db and a noise margin of 6db

the netgear gives

Connection Speed 3904 kbps 832 kbps
Line Attenuation 53 db 15 db
Noise Margin 15 db 10 db

so i know with my line i can get a bit more out of it with the right router

thanks

The Billion overrides the target noise margin set in the exchange, so you get a higher speed with a lower noise margin, but maybe also less stability. The Netgear respects the target noise margin, which appears to be 15 dB, so you get lower speed, a higher noise margin, and probably better stability.

It seems that instability in the past has resulted in the target noise margin being raised to the maximum. If your connection is now reasonably stable with the Billion, I would stick with that.

In that case your best bet probably would be to get a router which can be tweaked with DMT ( http://dmt.mhilfe.de/ ). Be aware though that recent Speedtouch firmware versions have had this capability removed, so unless you can find a last-year's version you might be better off with something like the DG834GT.

The DG834G version 4 is also tweakable.

I'm also on 53dB attenuation and find it rock solid - albeit with a slightly lower connection speed than the v3.
