Fixing Static IP on LAN loses access to internet?

[link to this post]

I'm having trouble setting up a TG585v7.

After managing to update the firmware via an XP PC and as per some of the hints given on here and from Thomson Tech Support, I thought I'd leave the fixed IP address (setup on PC) and DHCP turned off on router and carry on using it it that way. (ie the way that was recommended for flashing the firmware - static IP on lan)
However I can't access the internet on either PC or laptop (2 seperate fixed IP addresses) if Ieave the IP addresses manually set and DHCP off. (although I can access the router)

If I turn on DHCP and setup both the PC and laptop to obtain IP address manually then I can access the Internet on both machines again.

What have I not setup correctly, so that I may use fixed IP addresses on the LAN side?

Thanks

You don't have to turn DHCP off on the router, just because you've set static IPs in your PCs.
The static IP settings on the PCs will prevent them requesting an IP from the router.
What Dave has asked (have you remembered to set the DNS server IPs on your PCs - you can get these from your ISP, or use something like openDNS).

Alternatively, the Speedtouch allows you to fixed the IP for each connected device ("always use the same address", is the setting in 'Home Network' / 'Devices' / 'Configure' / 'Edit' for each device).
That way, you can leave the PCs set to dynamic IP & DNS details, yet they'll always be given the same IP.
This is the same way your router works (when connecting to most ISPs), if you've asked for a static IP - The router thinks it's dynamic, but the DHCP server always allocates the same IP.

Click Start -> Settings -> Network Connections -> Local Area Connection -> then click on Properties, scroll down to, Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) click on it then click Properties and you are now at, Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties.

Select:-

Use the following IP address:

IP address: 10.0.0.131

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Default gateway: 10.0.0.138

Select:-

Use the following DNS server addresses:

Preferred DNS server: 10.0.0.138

Alternate DNS server:

Click OK.
----------------

Configure your laptop wireless or wired NIC (Network Interface Card) Adapter.

Click Start -> Settings -> Network Connections -> Wireless Network Connection -> then click on Properties, scroll down to, Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) click on it then click Properties and you are now at, Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties.

On Network options (on the Vista laptop) of Internet Protocol V4 where I had set the adapter as per these Thomson instructions:-

It could be that you need to set a static IP on your network card to sucessfully upgrade the firmware.

1) Click on 'Start' and click on 'Start Search' at the bottom. Type in the following and press enter: ncpa.cpl
2) Right-click your 'Local Area connection' and select 'Properties'.
3) In the white list, select your 'Internet Protocol Version 4' and press 'Properties'.
4) Select 'Use the following IP address:

IP address: 192.168.1.64
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254

5) Press 'Ok', then 'Close'.
6) Restart your computer.

In the box underneath (windows networking)
a) Obtain DNS server address automatically
b) Use the following DNS server address

I left Blank as you cannot leave it on Auto if you have set your IP addresses manually.

Now this worked on either the PC or the laptop (xp and vista) for purposes of flashing the firmware, but didn't allow me to access the internet.

So if I'm reading your instructions correctly, I should be entering my ISP's DNS settings in the same box (at the bottom of network options) where I set the IP and submask addresses manually?

So basically I should put in Idnet (my isp's) DNS address on both PC and laptop in the field that says "Preffered DNS Server", leaving the Alternate server space empty?

Yes, if IDnet provide two DNS IPs (some ISPs do), but them both in, otherwise leave the alternate one blank.

You can find out if it's a DNS issue buy accessing a website via its IP address (e.g. http://212.58.253.67/ for the BBC website).
If your PC can access this, but cannot get to http://www.bbc.co.uk it's a DNS issue.

Yes, Idnet does supply two - I'll try that now , many thanks

* Just noted that the subnet mask for Idnet is 255.255.255.255 (wan) and of course my Lan setting is 255.255.255.0

I assume this difference is correct?

Edit:
So far so good - it's working on the Vista laptop!

I assume too Preffered and Alternate DNS servers (Windows speak) is the same as Primary and Secondary DNS servers (Idnet Speak)?

Yes, for a single static (or dynamic) ISP supplied IP address, this is normal.
The LAN setting in each of your PCs is correct at 255.255.255.0 (so they'll only be able to access devices in the same IP range - e.g. 192.168.1.x).
Access to IP addresses not in your range will go through your router, to the ISP gateway, then to the outside world.
