I'm really disappointed with this router (ZyXEL P660HW-T1). I bought it as I've used ZyXEL routers at work (I'm a network admin) and home for years and always liked them.
I bought this to replace a ZyXEL P-660H-D1 (looks exactly the same except no wireless).
When downloading from newsgroups with the non-WiFi 660H-D1 I get a very good download consistent at about 1950Kbps (ADSL2+). Ping times to the inside interface of the router remain constant at 1ms and no problems administering the router.
Swapping the router660H for the 660HW (set up from factory default with simple default rules - e.g. no bandwidth management etc.) the 660HW only gets a consistent 1150Kbps - a difference of 800Kbps!! This difference is absolutely consistent too, I swapped them over many times to test.
Not only that, the ping times to the inside interface of the 660-HW start going wild under heavy download - in the hundreds of ms and occasionally timing out - trying to administer the router using a browser is like wading through treacle.
Disabling wireless made no difference and there were certainly no wireless leechers using the connection!
The first thing I did was update the firmware with the latest 660-HW FW (12/09?) from Zyxel's site, which made no difference.
I have to say I didn't notice whether it synced as ADSL2 rather than ADSL2+. It showed a download sync speed of 18xx Kbps in status. The ATM loopback test always fails, though I wasn't bothered about that as it also fails on my 660-H that performs fine.
I've also had inconsistent performance with ZyXEL business grade wireless access gateways and their subsequent tech support and really lost confidence in their products other than the 660H-D1which has always been good. The fact that the INSIDE interface at 100Mbps also suffers under a load of ~ 20Mbps on the outside interface is almost like the router is struggling with resources (CPU or memory). Again, the non wifi 660-H has no such problems.
I don't know how this performs on lower speed ADSL connections (ie. whether there is a significant loss of speed for lower speed ADSLMAX connections etc.).
