spec me a Wireless Router to tweak SNR?

[link to this post]

Hi there, i have finally got a semi-decent connection but my line keeps wanting to sync with a SNR of 12. ISP not a great help so i was thinking of getting a router like the Speedtouch 585v6 with the DMT tool.

However its now no longer sold, i seem to recall a place that used to sell refurbished units.. or is ebay my only option now?

Also what other routers are good at tweaking SNR? and stable for long lines (i guess im asking for the holy grail) lol

Thanks in advance

A Netgear dg834GT is quite good on my long line and you can tweak the SNR and use the DGTeam firmware. There's plenty on eBay, the Sky branded ones can have the standard netgear firmware (or DGTeam) loaded and often sell quite cheaply.

I found the Netgear DG834G v4 is very stable on my 52dB line (better than the 585v6) and the noise margin is tweakable - note it has to be the v4 as the v5 has a different chipset

It would be better to find the cause of the target SNRM being 12dB, as it is either necessary or is a hangover from a previous problem.

If it is necessary then we need to look at your wiring.

If it is a hangover then that can be sorted.

I don't recommend the SpeedTouch 585v6 with DMT as after firmware 6.1.4.3 the facility to tweak the SNRM was removed. 6.1.4.3 was very flaky with respect to error statistics. Usually they were falsely high, but sometimes they were genuine. There have been several releases since, corrrecting the error side to a large extent, but no good for what you want.

The Netgears suggested by two posters so far are very good. But I come back to why the margin is at 12dB target.

Cause and effect there possibly.

What was wrong with your connection and how have you fixed it?
How long ago did you get it fixed? (It makes a difference to what you should do now).
What modem/router have you got now?
Can you post your line stats from the modem/router - see here if you don't know how.

i have no idea why the SNR is 12 my connection hasnt dropped in over years.

I currently use a Netgear DG834g V3

current stats are: (just been migrated to ADSL 2+)

Connection Speed 3712 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 52 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 12 db 23 db

its interesting to hear that the V4 has tweak software i wonder if it works for V3?

/edit no collisions but i cant see the CRC or HEC options / results

The v3 may be tweakable through the CLI but I don't think there is a DMT version to do it.

Re that noise margin, was it 6dB before, and is the sync now lower than before ADSL2+? There are several reports of oddities with the changeover if you are with an Entanet reseller. If it's BT I don't know.

If it's an Entanet reseller, raise a ticket. If it's ukfsn, then frown.

hi thanks for fast repsonse RobertoS

I am using ADSL24 via entanet. my sync is MUCH higher after the switch... i used to 1900-2200kbps... Thats with SNR between 10-12.

Now im 3712 (1st day on this new adsl2+) and SNR 12.

Can you explain what CLI is?

DGTeam seem to have a custom firmware for my version 3 DG834G but it doesnt say if it can tweak the SNR.

I think my SNR has always been high i've never seen it below 10 i dont think. Probably because we live quite far away from the exchange... I took out the ring wire and got new filters etc... so it bumped up my sync quite a bit about 1 year ago.

/edit it seems versions 1-3 have the old chipset and v4 is the one with broadcom that is tweakable. v4 or GT seem to be my options

It's worth a ticket to ADSL24 about that SNRM now, I think they are probably quite good at getting it altered on ADSL24. You might get another big increase in speed if they do.

If you don't ask you don't get. Costs nothing and you can't lose even if you don't gain.

See what happens about that before you start lashing out cash for a different router.

CLI stands for command line interface.

To check your CRC/FEC errors do the following.

Click on http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?todo=debug

This allows you to use the Netgears CLI (replace 192.168.0.1 with whatever IP address you use for your router).

Get a Windows command prompt (something like Start Menu->Run cmd).

telnet 192.168.0.1 (to connect to your router)

Enter the command

cat /proc/avalanche/avsar_modem_stats (this will give you connection details)

Sorry to be a forum necromancer and res my dead thread but you all were real helpful so here goes smile I've recently upgraded to a DG834G v4 (from a v3) tweaked the SNR from 12 to 7.1

However i forgot to check the CRC on the old router.. but for the new router: (are these stats bad?)

Total time = 4 hours 6 min 59 sec
SF = 888728
CRC = 328
LOS = 0
LOF = 0
ES = 237

i know what CRC is but whats ES?

Thanks in advance!!
