Got a D-Link 2740B but fancy a Netgear DG834N?

[link to this post]

Hi

You can run the DGTeam Netgear firmware on the D-Link 2740B, which just goes to show that these Broadcom routers are basically the same reference design just different firmwares!

So if you like the performance of the D-Link 2740B but prefer the Netgear interface and features offered by the DGTeam, you can have the best of both worlds and have your own D-Link/Netgear hybrid.

Details are posted here. Obviously you try this at your own risk, however I've been messing around with the D-Link 2740B firmware in order to get this to work and haven't been able to brick it yet.

No luck here frown

Tried 3 times and each time it seems to work but there is nothing there after the flash and reboot.

Never mind, back to dlink firmware and all is well smile

Hi

What version of the DLink firmware do you have on there at the moment?

You could try flashing back to the original firmware first, then trying again, as the original firmware doesn't seem so concerned with enforcing what you put on there.

I flashed from 2.73 then reflashed twice when it didn't work. I'm now back with 2.73. I'll downgrade in the morning and try flashing from there smile

Hi

It should work from the original firmware version, let me know how you get on and if this works I'll modify the instructions.

That did the trick Phil thanks!

I downgraded and then the upgrade worked perfectly, I'm now having fun fiddling with my new Netgear laugh

Me too. I did the upgrade this morning, and I'm posting using it now.

Hi

Excellent that others are having success. It feels kind of amazing that one minute you have a D-Link and the next you have a Netgear with no money changing hands smile

One thing to check: you can have multiple wireless networks (this was never implement properly on the D-Link firmware), so you can have several guest networks using different encryption or a guest network that is isolated from your LAN. By default I found the additional networks were enabled but the SSID was hidden, but someone could still get access. So just disable them or set them up as required. You can see these wireless networks from the Wireless Settings tab and using the drop down to change between them, then set them up or disable them as required.

The email of event logs actually works as well, never got the D-Link firmware to send the log out as an email!

The D-Link firmware was always stable for me anyway, and so far the Netgear firmware is performing well with 72 hours uptime.

Enjoy tinkering.

Phil

Thanks for the hint about the multiple wireless networks. As you say, they were enabled, but they aren't now. smile
