Help with FVS318 hardware firewall

I hope someone can help. I've now got a server in my office and would like to use a Netgear FVS318 hardware firewall device. I currently have a Netgear DG834G router to access the internet and planned to have the setup as Internet > router > firewall with server / PC's connected to the firewall device.

My problem is that I can connect to the Internet if the router is plugged into one of the LAN ports on the firewall - the problem being that the network isn't covered by the firewall itself unless it goes through the WAN port on the firewall. If I plug the router directly into the firewall's WAN port, I cannot connect to the internet at all.

I know the FVS318 supports PPOE but surely it can be used in the UK as it's widely sold here...? Can someone point me in the right direction as to what I'm doing wrong?

You need to set the DG834 to "modem mode" to prevent double nat, a guide is here, not very recent but should work.

Tried that but still no go, until I realised that my computers needed to have the Gateway address changed from the router to the firewall.

Am now on the internet using the FVS318.
