Anyone know if the 7800N can be mounted vertically and is this a good or a bad thing? I'm thinking air flow and temperature distribution.

Yes it can- there's sets of "keyhole' apertures underneath to allow any of the four side faces to be "up". Though with three aerials it might look a bit odd in some orientations.

I don't see it doing any harm .

The vented faces are on top, bottom, left and right.

I have been using a BiPAC 7800 for over a month now.
It is free standing horizontally and runs quite cool in that position.
The upper surface appears to be resonably well ventilated.

That's it.

And assuming cables coming in at the bottom, the indicator LEDs would be on the top which might not be convenient if you mount the router high up for best wireless range. Mount it so you can see the LEDs and the cables enter from the top, which isn't pretty

Something tells me it's intended to sit on a flat horizontal surface, and it seems fine that way. I've got mine on a shelf about 5' above floor level, over the iMac. It runs warm, but certainly not hot to the touch.

Depends on where the cables route from ... My old ST570 was mounted that way, LED on the bottom so I could see them from downstairs and the cables in at the top, just below the first floor ceiling - the came out of the wall just above, after routing through the attic and built in cupboard.

That's all very true... but I suspect more people are like me (put it where it will fit) rather than like you (flood-wire the house with Cat6e)
