Re: Need Cheap ADSL Router (Broadcom 6358)

yes i am still on the original bulldog DSLAM, connected at ADSL1 (up to max 8mbit) i average 4mbit connection for the last 4 years using my draytek router. but just for a try i thought i would test my cousins new billion 5200 and to my surprise it synced at 6mbit and for the first time i was able to download windows service pack from microsoft website getting 627k a sec sustained.

this is why im looking into getting a new router. i could easily net an extra 50% more speed compared to the draytek. dunno why the draytek is so slow and has frequent disconnections, around 1 disconnect every 2 days, it cost 109 quid!!!

I'd say the Billion 7700N is better primarily because of the newer broadcom chipset. I'll also be buying the 7700N (to use as a spare router) and i asked Billion UK today about its release date; they said retailers will start having this in stock from 6th June. If you cannot wait that long, then the DGN2200 is also a very good choice smile

Many Draytek routers use the Infineon chipset which is pants frown

iv used my current draytek for over 4 years so another month is not going to be a problem. i though the gdn2200 was broadcom 6358 based?

i just found a netgear DG834GSP v3 in my wardrobe, its virgin branded. im currently using it now and it too is syncing at 6016kbps. i know for sure that im sync locked by the isp to 6meg because many years ago i had disconnection issues due to dodgey phone line so i rang up bulldog and asked them to cap the line so it doesnt sync above 6meg. this reduced the rate of disconnections i used to get.

i shocked that the draytek only gets around 4meg sync. the netgear router i using is infineon chipset. it seems to be considerably better than what the draytek can manage. shocking.

shame the dynamic dns service on the router doesnt support changeip.com.

i will test this netgear out for a few days. if its reliable then i may be able to get away without purchasing a new router.

can see its infinion chipset.

and this netgear syncing 50% quicker and yes im getting 600k+ downloading torrent now. amazing. cant believe i could have had this sort of speed years ago if i had bothered to try another router.

I don't know whats in the 2820 - but mine sync's faster than the broadcom but is a lot less stable; and drops the line at a twitch of a cats whisker (ie, lots) - whereas the broadcom in the 585v7 holds the line for 10+ days then resyncs - which is a better.

I put it down to an incompatibility between the draytek firmware and/or chip, and the DSLAM.

James - be* pro - on THFB - sync about 17.2mbps - BQM

i need line stability so i dont get any disconnections while on skype or playing online games. so will invest in broadcom router. billion 7700 seems like best bet for the money.

I've found on Talktalk lines that the Thomson 585v8 is pretty good

Also my DG384GT does well..
