BT Home Hub 3 - MAC Address

Anyone know anyway I can change this? (WAN facing mac address if the HH3 has a different one facing the internal network)

Why?

Making a guess they are trying to use the HH3 as a cable router (which you can do, as it has an Ethernet AND ADSL2+ WAN port.

The ethernet port used in FTTC/P installs.

HH3 has 4 ethernet, 1 ADSL and 1 Infinity port.

I'm always suspicious when someone wants to change a MAC address or similar.

And is there a need to do so in this case? Surely the MAC address is not relevant to the WAN unless needed for "registration" of the device.

The Infinity port is just a WAN Ethernet port

Its for a mate - his cable router's overheating and shutting down for some reason and my HH3 is knocking around spare (decided to stick with my 2700hgv).

So toying with giving it a go but I'm not too clued up on cable and last I heard you needed to either spoof the mac address of the router to match whatever the cable modem was connected to originally - either that or call Virgin up with the new mac address.

So yeah without looking tooo dodgy any advice welcome.

just noticed the google search box... see they ditched mac address checks years ago so in theory this should be pretty straight forward unless there are some sort of ISP locks/checks on the HH3.

Well i'll take a trip over there tomorrow and try this out.

If it proves sticky in getting the IP address, switch off the cable modem for a couple of minutes and then try again.

I think the HH3 does need unlocking. Not sure though. Google that as well?

Yeah did some googling on the HH3 the other day - not alot out there, I think PSIdoc's working on an unlock but don't know if that will be for the WAN socket or just the adsl modem side of it.

Well just got back after trying. No go.

Asked him to power down all his gear before I set off, took about an hour to get there so the cable modem should have had plenty of time to release the mac from his router.

Tried a patch and a cross over network cable from the infintiy port to the cable router, just an amber light and no internet connectivity. Also tried a few factory resets in between and disabling DHCP - not that that was ever going to work since the cable modem wasn't in the mood for assigning IP addresses... being a modem...

Also tried changing the HH3's network address from 192.168.1.254 to 192.168.1.11 to match the cable router and same result.

Anyway put every thing back the way it was and powered it all off, told him to wait 40mins before switching it all back on. Glanced back at the cable modem and it was still on! He switched the wrong [censored] thing off so there's a chance it never released the mac address and that might have been all it was!

In anycase i'd already told him to go buy a netgear or something and I can't be bothered with trying again lol.
