Thomson Gateway TG585 v8 & SN Margin

[link to this post]

I've just picked up a sealed PlusNet 585 v8 for the handsome sum of £10 and finally connected to my new C&W LLU service. The stats aren't bad, but nor are they great:

Uptime: 0 days, 0:21:50
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,107 / 16,012
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,023 / 15,834
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 4.99 / 73.66
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 17.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 8.0 / 13.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 10.5 / 10.0
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM

Does anyone know if there is a way to adjust the SN Margin at the router end? DMTool isn't compatible with the 585 v8 running Software Release 8.2.7.8 frown

There isn't frown.

Tweaking is done using telnet. DMT is a nice GUI front end but does everything through telnet, as does any similar tool like RouterStats.

Technicolor/Thomson disabled telnet in their firmware in all versions after 6.1.4.3 on the 585v6. Believed to be at the request of Tiscali as user-tweaking annoyed them.

Grrr. Well, I can telnet into this 585 v8 - I've done so to set OpenDNS as the default. smile

I wondered if this sort of thing would be possible on the 585 v8:

Tweaking SNR margin to make your ADSL connection more stable

OK.

get to telnet. Then try

adslctl --snr 50

Apparently this is still disabled, but I did it from memory, incorrectly anyway. Should be

adslctl configure --snr 50

That's good news. It used not to be possible on the v6 and v7. Sounds as if someone has decided to reinstate it smile.

As per BatBoy's post.

Its adslctl that lets you get the stats as well frown.

Oh heck frown!

I've been spouting the Netgear adslctl, which IIRC also applied to Linksys. I could have sworn that was what I used on 6.1.4.3 though? Are you sure adslctl doesn't work on it as well?

I swapped a few times between that and 6.2.29.2.

Time I had a memory tonic frown.

Telnet, and hence DMT, did work after 6.1.4.3, but as you say - it was the noise margin tweaking that didn't, due to the command being disabled.
