I've used DG834v1, v3 and GT on ADSL and all have been able to send logs.

I am currently on FTTC using a WNDR4000.

The only issue people get with the emails side of things is when the isp blocks port 25 as there is no way to modify it.

The nuisance is that I updated my router to a Netgear VMDG280 last year and now it looks like another replacement. Because as you say its Virgin Media, I need to look for a modem cable router too which adds to the confusion.
