Want to use my HG635 for BT

I guess its simple i have a spare one after i sent my old one back also it seems to sync better than the homehub 79009vs79998

I would just put something like [email protected] for it to work or something else?

any other settings i need to change?

Out of curiosity why did you move from TTB to BT?

Hmm a few reasons

customer service was fine the first time or 2nd that i had a problem

then after i had a fault where my IP would vanish and i couldn't connect to the internet at all the customer service team didn't have a clue they sent me out a new router even though me telling them it would most likely a network problem on their end yet they disagreed with me and about an hour later it started working again on its own the same router same old IP ect.

i phoned again and got through to another person and they confirmed it was a network problem and they cancelled sending me a new router but i got one anyways

i had the same problem about 2 months later and they suggested to send me another new router even after explaining what happen the last time

it was like speaking to a wall so i just left it and about 2-3hrs late my ip returned and all things where good again.

the big problem was these disconnects where during while i was uploading projects or having skype calls with clients very annoying

but yeah after like 12 a months the price suddenly hiked up to £50 a month and thinking about the customer service being naff for the price i was paying, i decided just to join BT

£62 for infinity 2 unlimited weekend calls + my mobile with the same number unlimited calls texts and 20gb of data (works with tethering) and 125 quid mastercard.

Not really a bad deal considering.

ohh just to add i'm not saying BT customer service is good

but at least if you have a major problem you can contact mods on their community forums if you don't get joy from the banna phone.

while you can also if your on talktalk residential service

there is no business forums or much reply from their contact email

Understood! Personally i've found TTB support to be very good, any issues (eg network congestion) have been excellently dealt with, they even offered to let me leave my contract penalty free if they weren't able to fix the congestion/routing issues within 28 days...they fixed them within 14 days

Being nosey again, In terms of speed & pings is there much difference between TTB v BT?

Well one thing i can say about TTB or even the their home service i've never seen congestion on mine or my parents line

Speed and pings are similar far as i can tell

i will set up a broadband monitor over the weekend though.

didn't think that would effect me? since i've always had either 79997 or 79999 depends on the provider i do remember sky also i had 79997.

considering my ping in all games are the same or maybe 1ms difference between TBB and BT infinity.

Will need to check out my router stats again when i get home but my interleave level is 0 with a with a maximum attainable rate of 97 Mbps currently with a 11snr.

It doesn't have anything to do with the ISP. It's between you and the cabinet.

Are these stats supposed to show 79997?

Hey, I have had a few issues with my HH5 so using a HG635 myself.

I wanted to post here to hopefully save you a future headache.

BT use a different MTU on Infinity, as such if you set 1492 as default, lots of issues occur such as
1) Inability to stream spotify on a PS4 - it will not even play, just pause immediately
2) Inability to stream some content without buffering
3) Devices such as Google Chromecast Audio and Chromecast not working on various applications
4) Gaming randomly cutting out

You need to setup as follows (hard labour into extracting settings from HH went into this)

Name: Internet_VDSL
Service Type: INTERNET, untick TR069
Connection Type: PPP_Routed
MRU: 1488 (this is where every guide goes wrong) Infinity does NOT use 1492 MTU
MSS: 1448 (every guide gets this wrong)
NAT Type: 1
Enable VLAN: ticked
VLAN ID: 101
802.1p: 2
PPP Authentication mode: AUTO
PPP Trigger Mode: Always Online
Internet Account: [email protected]
Internet Password: BT
IP Protocol Version: IPv4

Are you using an openreach modem, apparently that is set to 1492 and works fine... Not been able to validate that as I do not have a modem.

For the standard HH5 without modem.

You can verify this using a terminal on OSX,

Enter
ping -D -g <minsize> -G <maxsize> -h <sizeincr> <host> to run a ping sweep.

It will stop at "frag needed and DF set (MTU 1488)" demonstrating the MTU is 1488 when using BT Homehub 5. Well mine does anyways, this is how I identified it needed to be 1488, as that's what my HH was coming back at.

I'm not really saying 1492 is necessarily an issue across the board, but certainly with a HG635 there are issues.

With 1492 I cannot stream spotify on PS4 and chromecast audio fails to work. Also more issues but they're the big ones for me.

The link I posted does the check for you. You said "Infinity does NOT use 1492 MTU" but it does.

Infinity on the HomeHub 5A, not using an openreach modem reports MTU of 1488 at my end not 1492.

Using 1492 on another router causes me no end of issues.

For those setting up a HG635, as this post relates, set it to 1488.

I did not pluck 1488 out of nowhere, I did testing to diagnose my issues.

EDIT: Your tool is not for me, I work in penetration testing and hence I am against having ICMP exposed unnecessarily, especially when command line can do the job without the need.
