Hi
I am currently with PlusNet and am having issues with my Technicolor router. However when I do a speedtest I get approx 15.4 Mbps. They sent me out a Hub Zero. However when I do speed tests on this I only get 12 Mbps. Im taking it this is just a [censored] router.
Can you recommend a reasonable budget router around the £30 price point that will offer me decent speeds? Would also love it to have gigabit Ethernet and even a USB port that would take my external HDD.
Hopefully this isn't too tall an order lol
Many thanks

are those tests wired or wireless - if wired can you advise the router stats (noise margin, speeds and attenuation)

Have the PC connected to the router using Ethernet. Doing a straight swap looses about 3.5 Mbps. I.E. the speedtest on the technicolor router gets 15.4 while the Hub Zero gets 12.
Can't seem to find anything within the router page with the info about Noise margins or attenuation but speeds are as follows
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 440 / 18,346

7800n will do. rock solid

However, how far are you from the exchange? The speed you quote may be ok

The first thing to do is to get onto Plusnet (Chat may be the best place) and ask for your upstream to be uncapped
The other thing to check is your Current Line Speed from https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer... (login required)
Is the bandwidth up and down the same with the other router

According to the Plusnet site when I log in the line speed is 21Mb. I have been talking with Plusnet for months about my connection as it seems to be dropping. They said again today that he had reset the speed on the line. According to the BT Wholesale test site the IP Profile is showing at 16Mbps. The current issue though is why the Hub Zero is 3.5 Mbps slower than the Technicolor which is odd. They couldn't answer that. Even tried to get them to send me a free Hub One but they weren't having any of that lol

Rather than speed tests you need to be looking at the speeds the router connects at

Is that the
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 440 / 18,346?

Yes and there may be attenuation and SNR (Noise Margin) figures too

I can't see any just the connection speeds

Going from memory, on the Technicolor on many screens there are "Details" and/or "Config" buttons towards the top right. The line stats are somewhere in there I think.
On the Hub, as it is basically a BT Home Hub 5A, the stats are likely to be in the Troubleshooting section, after you have logged in to the Router itself. (192.168.1.254 perhaps?)

If you actually need a new router is it something like this you are looking for?

For my ADSL connection I'm still using an old Netgear DG834GT so can't comment on the pros and cons of the TP-Link, anyway if you feel like it there are 971 customer reviews to trawl through

I've been through every setting and link within the router settings page and there is definitely nothing else there. All I can see is the "Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 440 / 18,357". There is definitely nothing about noise or anything else.
I have just ordered a Plusnet Hub one from Ebay which cost me £25. Brand new and sealed. Basically a BT Hub 5 which, though not perfect ticks the right boxes and is a decent enough router for the money.

I suggest your connection speeds are not going to improve much beyond what you are already getting
