Better modem for my line?

Hi people,

Not looked at upgrading things in a while and wondering if much has changed, I moved house and now have an ECI cabinet but modem is a Hawai one.

Is there a way to see what modem would go best with this?

Im getting pings to 8.8.8.8 of 11ms and figure interleaving will be on low, I'd like to get fastpath or atleast try to.

Also would changing the BT mastersocket help? Our new home has an older one than last and this one has only one port so its not pre-filtered etc..

Just wondering what else I could try to see if I can get off interleaving (gaming reasons)

With your estimates I don't think it matters much what modem you have, but if your modem is the HG612 which is what you seem to say, it is easy to flash an unlocked version of its firmware, which will allow you to obtain full stats. (It is the standard firmware but with the locking code removed, so no risk).

In the full stats it is obvious whether or not interleaving is on, and to what degree.

At 11ms ping I doubt if you are on interleaved.

Not a chance on gods Earth that you are interleaved. The minimum delay added by interleaving on ECI cabinets is 8ms.
You would need a 3ms ping as standard for that.

Okay but I see that many people post FTTC stats where they're getting pings around 5ms or less mark, so is there no way to bring myself more in line with these? I have tried pinging many addresses and 8.8.8.8 seems about the lowest (13ms right now).

My BB package is due for renewal in 2 months so I could also change provider, is there maybe providers that has infrastructure closer? if so is there a geographical map of providers main infrastructure that I can go by?

Most pings are much higher - Eu fortnite servers get me around 45ms

Easy, move and rent or buy a flat house next to LINX or some other internet exchange.

I've found having a Lantiq/Infineon chipset modem connected to an ECI DSLAM, compared to a Broadcom chipset modem, reduces my latency by around 2ms to 3ms. You may well find the same. The only downside is that it appears the downstream attainable rate will be slightly less as Lantiq/Infineon chipset modem's appear to apply a reed solomon coding (R) of 16 which is also a light form of error correction, very much like the upstream has as standard.

And when people are boasting there is a sense of never fully trusting what some people say online.

It depends where you and they are on the country. The ISP's routing can have an impact, but you can't beat the laws of physics.

Most IP's that you ping go through London, so proximity to London generally dictates your lowest possible ping.
FTTP generally gives lower pings than FTTC also.
Those in London with FTTP will/can have sub 5ms pings.
I'm in Central Scotland and the very lowest ping I've had is 15.6ms(FTTC).
On FTTP in the Scottish Highlands pings are often above 20ms.

A 13ms ping on FTTC is low. To have 8ms added by interleaving would mean you have a 5ms ping.
I'd throw a guess you're in Middlesbrough (there's 4 Marton exchanges).
You won't get much lower than 13ms in the North East with BT.

Antihesis

Unless you are on the Marton in Warwickshire you will not get under 11ms ping at the others, even Warwickshire will struggle to get less than 11ms.
If you were 'Marton Heath' then a Manchester based ISP may improve things slightly. But also depends where the game is hosted..

I get 6ms ping to 8.8.8.8 on FTTC but I am in London. I'm using a Vigor 130 modem which gives me Fastpath and near maximum 79997 downtream - much better than the Asus DSL-AC68U I was previously using.

I get 5ms to 6ms to 8.8.8.8 on fastpath with a Vigor 2860Vac (bridged as a modem however) via my Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Pro 8. I'm currently connected via ethernet cable, I used to connect wirelessly which gave me a slightly higher ping (by a few milliseconds). Also FTTC 80/20 on AAISP via TalkTalk Business. ECI DSLAM. If I use a modem with a Broadcom chipset then the ping is generally a few milliseconds higher. Located in Eastbourne.
