I currently have Virgin 350 using the hub in modem only mode with my Asus RT-AC86U with Merlin firmware. Use DDNS and Port Forwarding.
Don't want to use the supplied hardware from Vodafone. I could buy something like the Draytek Vigor 130, Huawei HG612 V3b or I believe a ZyXEL VMG1312-B10A is another modem option.
Or should I consider any other modems or modem/router combo?
Is the BT Smarthub2 any good as a combo device?

The 3 modems you listed will all work great with the Asus router.
The BT Smart Hub 2 (or any BT Hub) won't work on Vodafone.

To use other equipment, you will have to ask Vodafone support for your connection userid and password. Probably best to get these by 'chat' to reduce the chance of error. Vodafone have a website forum where the issue of what equipment to use is discussed,

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually did that last night via the chat and copied and pasted the details

So now having the settings would a BT Smart Hub 2 be a good option as an all in one device? I see new ones on ebay reasonably priced? Anyone using one of these with port forwarding and DDNS?

As John83 said a few posts back, the SmartHub 2 will not work. It will not accept the Vodafone login details.

Yes I was going to mention that the BT Hubs will work with PlusNet but I decided it wasn't relevant to the Vodafone related topic.

The HG612 and that Zyxel are both very old hat these days. Both could well be suffering from age anyway.
IIRC the Zyxel v10D is far better.
My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, sites and mail hosting - Tsohost & Ionos.
Connection - Three B311 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up. 1+ 8 Pro max 80Mbps down, 24Mbps up.

Not strictly true in terms of them being modems. The HG612 whilst dated still performs very well. Known to out perform Zyxels on the upstream.
The B10D's do not have the common mode noise filter that the B10A's have.
Best off going for a brand new B10A. Can pick them up for £20. Plenty were handed out by ISP's and have been left in boxes unused.

The VMG1312-B10D contains 1 of Broadcoms budget chipsets and no noise filter.
The VMG1312-B10A has the excellent BCM63168 and an additional noise filter.
The A variant is a much better device.
