Good point. But they share the same firmware unless I experiment with merlin and it is a bit out of my budget.

Well that is 2 days 3 hours up time and downloads and wifi transfers still ok. I think if I make a reconfig I will have to do a full reboot as well. See how long it goes.

Nope, they use different firmware as they have different hardware components. Otherwise look for a used RT-AC68U or RT-AC87U on ebay, they can often be bought for < £100 - both will be significantly better than your current RT-AC1200G+ which is a budget Asus model.

Alternatively consider a Netgear R6300v2 such as this. Its one of the best wifi 5 routers out there.

Agreed, for the faster lines you need the faster CPU in the RT-AC86U or RT-AC88U models.

The WiFi 6 models are significantly more expensive (e.g. the RT-AX88U)

Thanks for the advice both of you, I will keep my eye on Ebay for a RT-AC86U.

I've been using the RT-AC68U for years.
Great router, supported by Merlin, and a bit cheaper than the 86U.

I get a pinch under 1Gb/s over WiFi to my PC (with a PCE-AC68 fitted).

To heck with it, I have ordered a new AC68U from Amazon and will be returning the 1200G.

I've got a similar setup to yours, a VMG1312-B10A and an RT-AC68u.

After testing a wide range of routers, the RT-AC68U is a superb router for the money.

What firmware do you use Wolvesmad? I have seen two merlin based alternatives for the AC68U.
