Best new routers for long line

[link to this post]

Hello there.

Going to be switching to an isp in the coming weeks where i need to have my own router. I am running the FTTC 80/20 atm.

I used to have a billion bipac 7800N as im on a line with approx 4100m of length before i switched to using Plusnets own router. Id like to get something newer than my old billion but works just as well on long lines. Do i really need a router that works well on long lines now that im connected to a local cabinet? All too techy for me.

I run a mesh wifi extender system off my current PN router too but cant remember the brand at the moment.

Any recommendations much appreciated.

Thanks.

as im on a line with approx 4100m

From the exchange possibly.

That distance from the cabinet would give no sync at all on FTTC.

Sorry yes thats what i meant. 4100m to exchange. As im getting my fibre from the near cabinet would i need to get a modem/router thats suited for long lines or would it not be necessary?

Distance to the exchange is not really relevant. What is your connection speed now?

My plusnet portal is reporting 72mb down and 17mb up.

I had a broadband engineer come to install thw mesh wifi system a few months back and said the line was showing as solid with vwryblittle to no errors amazingly.

72 Mbps from VDSL2 is good and suggests close to cabinet, i.e. a short line

That's a fairly short line (less than 300 metres I'd say). Almost within range of G.FAST.

I'm guessing that you used the Billion on ADSL and switched to Plusnet's router when you switched to FTTC. You can't use the Billion (as perhaps you know) as it doesn't have a VDSL modem. You'll either have to pair it with a modem or buy a combined modem/router.

I'm using a 7800N paired with a HG612 modem. I've found that it gives a good, stable connection. I tried a Fritzbox 7530 but had problems with stability and a poorer connection speed.

I'm sure others can advise on a good combined modem/router if that's what you'd prefer.

Unless your Plusnet router is locked down, just changing the login-details should work. Which ISP are you changing to?

My billion is broke anyway so will have to get a new router entirely.

Im going to go with one of the smaller ISPs.. Either AAISP, IDNet or Aquiss.

All 3 seem very reputable so will be hard to choose.
