Replacement for a Bipac7800DXL

[link to this post]

Hi
Can anyone advise as to a suitable replacement for a Billion 7800DXL Router.
The problem is ADSL2 over a 5Km copper line from an unbundled exchange . Isp is BT.
BTs router offerings produce about 2mbits download rate and about 200kbits up.
my current Billion 7000dxl after careful "tweaking" will give 5/0.8 down/up
FTPoD is not a option as I have been quoted north of £100k as there are no other properties to defray the cost
Thank

Why do you need to replace it if it offers a better connection than the BT router? Is there a fault with it?

I am thinking about getting one of those routers as a temporary measure until FTTP becomes available in around 6 months time.

Reading the manual the SNR seems adjustable but only as a whole and not the up/down individually. I do not know whether the up & down SNR can be adjusted individually on any router, it cannot on my old Speedtouch where there is only one SNR adjustment.

ATM I am with Sky and I am switching to BT in around 5 days time and the upload SNR is far too high which is limiting my upload speed well below what it was with Be Broadand 784 kbps compared with over 1300 kbps. Maybe it will not be an issue with BT. Sky is [censored] with clueless techies.

SKY ADSL 2/2+ Atten: 27dB to 27.5dB up, 49dB to 49.5dB down
Still using SpeedTouch 546v5 and looking for 6.1.4.3 firmware currently stuck with 5.4.0.11

Not that it helps necessarily your OP question, but to set the record straight on the huge cost of FTTPoD in your situation, would not actually be down to “no other properties to defray the cost” as it’s only the properties that could be *directly* served by your new FTTP connection - at best up to 12 others (@ £50 reduction per premises) including your own (@ £700 reduction).

So you see even in the “optimum” defrayment scenario where you and 11 neighbours could benefit from connection, then the net discount you would receive on your quote would ‘only’ be in the order of £1250. Ultimately even though the fibre serving you may pass dozens or even hundreds of properties on the way to your premises, they don’t count at all for cost defrayment purposes unfortunately.

The gargantuan cost is in reality driven by distance from the nearest aggregation node and the physical cost of bringing it to your premises.

My though of a replacement was driven by the fact that this router has been in use now for at least 7 years an i suspected I could be living on borrowed time/
It was the only router which gave an sort of reasonable download rate . The supplied BT hub would give less than 2mBits whereas on a bad day with the Billion I can double that. I also like the idea of being able to some extent control the SNR and not let it tottally be dictated by DLM

It's still working so why worry about it ATM? Electronics do not usually fail except for capacitors but they usually last longer than 7 years.

The biggest danger which I have personally experienced is lightning which destroyed one of my Speedtouch routers. I now disconnect my router at the first sign of a thunder storm.

It works so don't worry about it. You have the BT one even if it is slow to get online if it was to fail, you can always find a replacement.
