replacement router

[link to this post]

Does anyone have recommendations for a good router?
Normally I would prefer the Draytek range. So something with similar capabilities.
Would prefer with built-in Voip, WiFi, Vlans.
Only have ADSL at this location, no fibre. But would want the VDSL for future 'just in case'.

VDSL will not be of use if you end up with FTTP but an RJ45 Wan port could be useful.

Thanks for the reply Trolleybus.
Drayteks are not cheap. Something in the same region would be fine.

Was really hoping this thread would have brought out some suggestions.

The killer in your wish list is a built in VoIP ATA - There are very few routers that have that capability. A compromise would be an ASUS DSL-N16 Wireless-N300 VDSL2/ADSL2+ Modem Router and separately a Gigaset N300 IP PSTN & VoIP/SIP DECT Wireless Base Station to which you can add any POTS phone of your choice. Total cost around £150.

At the other end of the scale of expenditure would be the Draytek Vigor 2865Vac for around £400 to which you would add a POTS phone of your choice. I have tried both in my home with the performance of the Vigor being pretty impressive for both internet connectivity and the footprint of the wireless signal. The only downside is that there is no passthrough onto PSTN.

It really is the case that the more you pay the better the product together with a host of addons that you may have a need for.

Can I ask why the Asus DSL-N16?

It has very old Wireless N but worst of all it has a horrific Mediatek MT7510 xDSL chipset.

Thanks for that Trolleybus.
The Gigaset N300 is something I've looked at in the past. Would prefer an all-in-one box though. It might come to separates.

The Draytek 2865Vac would be good, except supply is a big problem.
Draytek have the new 2866 range out, but no V model.
They do have a new products briefing on the 8th September. Hopefully some news on availability then.

Bought the 2865 only last week. There were several retailers that had stock with the delivered price ranging from £390 to £410. Came the next day.

On the horizon there may well be a router that matches your exact needs within your budget, but we are talking about the here and now with presumably your need to move forward with replacing your existing router now.

It was a free router supplied by the ISP to a relative. It seems to work well and has features that were sought after, like VPN access. I do, however, have a suspicion that maybe the internet connection speeds might be better with a different router.

If you care to elaborate on the downsides to this router to help decide whether a replacement would be highly desirable, that would be useful. Thank you.
