cheap VDSL router

I think my Zyxel is failing, the Wifi seems to be failing, it has been playing up for about 3 months, but the last couple of days it seems to be getting worse, need to be turned off and back on again to get Wi-fi working.
I am going to try my old TP link tl_WR1043ND router connected to my old open reach modem tomorrow, if that fails, which is the best cheapish VDSL router/modem? i don't want to go to crazy, just in case I do change over it 18 months time. If I could find the PSU to the old plusnet Hub, I would use that.

Oh well, I stuck my old TP link router on with my old open reach modem and to be honest it seems to work better than the Zyxel in that my broadband seems to be faster, not bad for a 9 years old router. Sure, Wi-fi is only 2.4Ghz, but I only have a mobile phone that works at 5Ghz.
so far no Wi-fi drop out, so I will keep this set up now at least until I decide if I am going with Zzoomm in 18 months time.

If you are currently with your ISP you can send them a message that your router is faulty so they can send you a replacement.

£48 gigabit wireless. But obviously if you are going to join Zzoomm in 18 months maybe saving up for a better high end router may be a better idea.

Or you can join another ISP like Sky/TalkTalk/Vodafone/BT/Zen/EE if you are out of contract. They are basically the best routers supplied with ISPs.

I'm in a similar position where my 24 month contract with TalkTalk ended and am looking to join another ISP due to their price hikes. Was waiting for Community Fibre to come but still shows as Coming Soon within next few months last 10 months!

I'm contemplating on whether to buy a new router for FTTP and wait for them to come or join another ISP.

I don't think buying a cheap VDSL router is a good idea at this stage particularly if FTTP comes.

If your old TP Link router is working as expected then that's great! Hopefully you can wait when FTTP comes and upgrade to better hardware.

If there is no hope of FTTP coming then switching ISP in the case of a faulty router is a better idea as you get a new router again.

As you're on Plusnet have you considered BT HH6 ? Available £15-£25 on usual sites, I got mine year before last to replace Hub One and never looked back. Plenty of setup info on PN forum, it's easy when even I could do it first time. I've had my fill of fancy routers, £80 scrap when wifi failed after two years when it came out of warranty.

How about an ebay Zyxel VMG3925-B10C? The one I am using for a Plusnet FTTC connection works fine.

i looked at an Asus, but I did not see that one, but the oneI looked at was around £24, but I don't think it offered me anything different to using the Tp-link, apart from having it all in one.

Plusnet may send me another router and I did think of that, i can't leave plusnet for 18 months as I signed up for a new contract.

To be honest, considering that the TP.link is 9 years old it is doing well, no drop out of wi-fi at all so far today or yesterday , so I may keep things as they are.
FTTP is coming here spring/summer, but since I am in a 18-month contract I will have to wait a bit.
ZZoomm uses two ADTRAn SR400ac, one up and one down for better Wi-fi, that is with the lower speed connections, higher ones uses Zyxel.

i have too many hubs, they need sorting, looks rubbish in the living room, may see if I can move most of them up here somewhere, I did think about the cupboard under the stairs, but some of these hubs require Wi-fi.
I think I will stay as I am now if things keep working, thanks for the reply

I could get the BT HH, I could have grabbed the one from my Neighbour when they went to sky, oh I think that was a HH5
I have a load of routers here, but most of them are ADSL, i did find the old plusnet Hub, the one that they supplied with the open reach modem, a ADSL router that they modified to work on WAN. I don't think I ever had what you call a fancy router, maybe the most fancy was the Zyxel that have now failed on me.
i do think providers give out far too many routers for no reason, I have seen posts on Plusnet site of people wanting a new router just because they want the latest one and yet their old router is fine. just like people with mobile phones

Anyway, this has got me thinking about moving everything up here, apart from the modem, I presume I can bring the router up here using a long Ethernet cable, the same cable that this computer use to connect to the router downstairs, just get a shorter cable from the router to the computer, mmm, it is worth a thought.,
