Which CityFibre providers allow modem / bridge mode?

[link to this post]

Hi,

I'm currently with VM on there 1Gbps service. I'm using their supplied hub in modem mode which allows me to connect my own Amplifi HD mesh router.

I'm looking to move away from VM and specifically to a CityFibre provider.

I was keen to go with Zen Internet, but they don't support this configuration, you have to use their combined router and modem within the supplied FritzBox.

Anyone know which of the CityFibre providers support a modem only mode so I can carry on using my existing Amplifi HD mesh router?

Note the Amplifi HD mesh router doesn't have a built in modem it's purely just a network mesh router which takes a WAN input.

according to this you can

https://www.zen.co.uk/help-support/general-settings-...

and your prefered router supports vlan ids

You don't need to use their Fritzbox, you just need to use PPPoE on the chosen router, and ensure it allows VLAN tagging on the WAN Interface (most CityFibre ISPs use VLAN 911)

I think if you have an issue on your connection you may need to switch back to the Fritzbox to prove the fault still exists on their network (but then thats not unusual for any ISP)

You shouldn't need to use the ISP router with a CityFibre service.

CityFibre's service is PON (GPON or XGS-PON) and they provide an ONT which gives you an Ethernet Port to connect to your router, there is no modem requirement for the router.

Amplifi don't seem to make it clear if they support PPP or DHCP (IPoE) options for the WAN port, if they do you should just need to plug the WAN port in the ONT and configure the VLAN and PPP/DHCP details from your ISP for it to work.

Perhaps I should have added that I also need a requirement for a digital landline phone service which complecates things.

In the case of Zen that appears to need their FritzBox, I'm guessing that will be the same for other CityFibre ISPs, that in order to use their phone service I would need to use their supplied router?

Seperate your landline to another supplier.

so

Order CF
once CF is installed and running
Migrate your landline number to a voip provider which should then kill your vm account.

I agree
This is the route I went down when I moved to Vodafone on CF, I left Plusnet and used this method to kill my service once I have everything up and running

Vodafone Gigafast 100Mb Oct-2021
Previously Unlimited Fibre on plusnet
Customer since 2003 - Dial up - ADSL - Fibre FTTC

That's exactly what I did. I use Zen's provided Fritzbox as an additional AP and SIP gateway for my landline which I migrated to A&A
I have an Asus for my main router, uses pppoe (Zen provide this upfront)
works well and you can use any provider on Cityfibre, i would probably consider IDNet when my contract is up.

It's possible to use Zens VOIP without the Fritzbox.

There's a thread in the Zen sub forum explaining how and showing where in the Zen site to get the necessary credentials.
