have been using mobile broadband for a few years now so currently looking into wifi routers.
Moving next month up to the north east of Scotland. I have PN Full Fibre 900 getting installed.
I usually don't use the ISP supplied routers as historically found them very poor and locked down.
In the past I went for Asus that I could use Merlin firmwares on. The RT-BE-92U has caught my eye.
I have a TP- Link TL-WPA4221 AV600 Kit that will be repurposed for outside coverage in the summer. Never had TP or Netgear routers before.
Been looking at the UniFi Express 7 and their stuff.
The property is a 3 bedroom new build semi detached bungalow with an approx area of 62.09m3
Looking for recommendations please
Cheers

Have serious think about UniFi ... The whole eco-system, gateway, switch, APs, cameras, storage all works together with just a single user interface. Depending on the internal construction - brick, block, board, foil-backed board, will really determine the additional APs needed. You can then chose to hardwire or mesh from the gateway (and AP).
I personally use Unifi - setting up BQM is fairly easy but needs some rules, IPv6 works too. On mione there are 3 (soon 4) APs, 3+ switches, 10 cameras, 16TB of video and all through a fairly friendly single interface which I can access from PC, phone, tablet both on-site or remote. My UDM-Pro has been in for coming up 5 years - no issues and the high end domestic/residential level.

I have actual just submitted an offer to buy Ubiquiti UniFi Express UX7 on eBay. Thanks for both your advice

|

Looking at ebay some of those are priced higher than buying from Ubiquiti directly!
If you are unsuccessful with the offer look at teh UI store: https://uk.store.ui.com/uk/en/category/all-cloud-gat... and most comes with a 2-year warranty.

On the store £190
I have offered £142 on ebay for one

Lets see what happens - have you confirmed it comes with the USB power adapter and UK power cord?

Nope better do that now

Didn't come with uk power cord. Also missing feet and braided ethernet cable so changed my mind

If you believe you want to go the Ubiquiti route - and it is an excellent choice for high end residential. Buld a full order - gateway, extra APs, UI cables - nice and thin so can be hidden, maybe a camera or two, doorbell &c &c and order direct from the UK store. All come with 2 year warranty.

TBH, I was starting to think it was overkill for my needs as I don't need that scalability. I started looking at GL.inet and Cudy Routers as alternatives to the Asus

What about the basics such as additional access points?

Its only myself in the property. I could have the router in the loft and run ethernet to the lounge.
I will use the wifi extender I already have if I need it for the back garden in the summer.

You get some noce long summer days up there ... I have spent many late September weeks around Grantown, Elgin, Cabrach, Huntly, Cullen, Buckie. Always nice warm evenings.

Fingers crossed. I use to live in Aberdeenshire around 40 years ago but moved to the central belt for college / university. Decided to move back now I am retired.

Only problem up there, once you are outside the city or major towns, is being remote and potentially cut off in winter. There is one road that I drive regularly when up there - The Cabrach which is 17 miles of nothing and sometimes you may not see another vehicle.

I know the Cabrach - I grew up in Dufftown until I was 10 or 11. I have driven around Lumdsden / Rhynie way too when I have been unable to get over the Lecht due to snow (heading for Crathie / Ballater way). I was concerned about being away from proper winters for the last 40 years and not being able to cope
However, I was assured by the estate agent that Macduff and Banff don't get it too bad due to the sea.
|
|
|
So you know the road well ... I had family in Rhynie and still have firends there. Best part about the Cabrach is the Grouse Inn.

I was a bit young for the Grouse Inn in those days

it might be too late but this thread talks about the be-92u and an issue which may or may not be problematic. Thanks for the headsup. I ended up buying a second hand GL.inet Flint 2 off eBay due to be delivered today.
However, it doesn't look like I will be moving anytime soon as my buyer has decided after 5 weeks that my property doesn't fit her needs! You couldn't make it up!
