Multi-gig FTTP Router Recommendations

[link to this post]

After months of "computer says no", I finally spoke to someone at EE with some understanding and managed to order an upgrade to the 1.6Gb service (without having to leave and come back).

I understand the supplied hardware isn't multi-gig WLAN enabled so I'm looking for a router that will do the job.

I've always used NetGear or ASUS so would prefer to stay with their brands.

Alternatively, you could use a separate wireless access point.

https://www.broadbandbuyer.com/ sell the Ubiquiti products.

Look at Asus website, there are some with 2.5 Gb WAN ports, such as the AX88U Pro or newer.

Ubiquiti Dream Machine - Pro will handle 3.5 Gbps

Or you could go for their new UDM-Beast which has a rather nice 25Gbps

I would agree with this but first I would try the EE Supplied Router to see if it meets your needs or not.

The if your house is wired with high speed ethernet cable you have a choice between a modular system that gives more network control in the form of VLANs and a Stand Alone Router and for Stand Alone Routers Asus is usually a very good choice.

Regarding routers: Personally, having tried many makes of routers, I found that routers from Asus suited me form a single device viewpoint. - (Since our house is fully wired with CAT6a Ethernet Cable we recently went down the Ubiquiti modular device route with mixed results, especially regarding WIFI but from a network control VLAN viewpoint I would say that it has far more options if you want to consider using VLANs).

Up until very recently I used my Asus RT-AX88U Pro and it worked great with my 1Gbps broadband, it has great WIFI Speed and range and it has a 2.5gbps Wan port and a 2.5gbps LAN port.

My RT-AX88U Pro is now a few years old and the newer Asus RT-BE88U looks similar.

I'd highly recommend the Ubiquiti UCG-Fiber.

Make sure whatever router you buy can do PPPoE @ 1.8Gbps (At least)

-------------------------------------------------------------------
AOL (1997-2004): ~33.6-56Kbps
Telewest (2004-2006): 256Kbps -> 512Kbps
University of Portsmouth (2013 - 2014) - Supposedly 100/100Mbps
Virgin Media (2014 - 2021): ~1150/53Mbps (MikroTik RB4011iGS)
BT (2006 - Present): 8128/448 -> 22494/1211 -> 80Mbps FTTC (MikroTik hEX)
EE (2024 - Present): 900/115Mbps FTTP (Ubiquiti UCG-Fiber)

It should be noted that the UCG Fiber does not have any wifi and either a separate wifi access point will need to be obtained or his existing routers will need to be used as wifi access points if wifi is needed.

In some ways the choice depends on if the OP wants a stand alone system or a modular system.

As can be seen on another thread; I recently bought a UCG Fiber together with four Ubiquiti 2.5g managed switches and although I quite like the UCG Fiber and the Ubiquiti System, (especially its ease of setting up and controlling VLANs), there are parts that I do not like, (eg. my own findings that the WIFI range and the WIFI performance overall was vastly inferior to my Asus Router), it also has a tendancy to indicate false positive errors when some devices, (eg. the Sky Q Boxes), are unplugged and then plugged into different ports, (eg. Anomaly 70 errors), which then take over 24 hours to clear and its tendancy to hold onto old memories long after corrections/changes have been made).

Regarding the inferior WIFI: that was definitely the case.

However, with regard to the tendance to hold onto older memories, (eg. Anomaly 70 error messages), long after corrections have been made: since I am still very new to the Ubiquiti system, it could be that I am missing something with regard this retention of old memories issue such as the reporting anomaly 70 errors for over 24 hours but I suspect that this issue is some form of design feature or possibly a glitch that personally I don't like).

Main PC (5GB network port) and Mac Studio (10GB network port).

Everything else is wifi.

Your ideal router would have at least 3 copper ports at 2.5G or above.

The new Mikrotik hAP be3 looks like it would fit the bill, and it is also one of the few Mikrotik boxes with integrated wifi. See the block diagram.

I've not used any Mikrotik devices with wifi, but I'm a big fan of Mikrotik routers in general. My main home router is an RB4011, with separate Unifi access points powered from an old hEX PoE which I'm using as a PoE switch.
