Line Bonding

[link to this post]

Hi there,

I currently get around 1Mbps download and 0.3Mbps upload and I live around 1.5 miles from my cabinet and 1.7 miles from the exchange.

I contacted BT Wholesale and they have offered me a line bonding service for rural customers (up to 2Mbps).

Will I be capped at 2 Mbps or will I get higher?

Will I need a new router?

The man on the phone said that the procedure needed to be passed over to London to get an approval for a grant.

Thanks for your help,
Jack

Broadband Enabling Technology is not a fibre based technology, so wrong section.
It uses either 1 pair for a 1Mbits connection , or 2 Pairs for a 2Mbits connection.
I believe the connection speeds are fixed, though throughput would be dependant on the usual factors.
I think there is additional hardware supplied with the service by Openreach

If you just 1.7miles from the exchange (rought estimate) you should be able to get more than 1mb...

What are your current stats? and are you connected to the master socket or to an extension?

Not all the time, he could be going to the cab in the oposite direction to the exchange, then the cab could then route back past his house to the exchange.

Apologies on the forum this is in - I'm so used to viewing the fibre forum.

Is this line bonding thing usually expensive?

depends exactly what it is. There are two line rentals, two ADSL rentals, extra kit in some instances - but I don't know what you're actually being offerred.

As mentioned, the description sounds like a BET service. As ever, it's 'up to' with 1 pair seeing around 750Kbps and with two pairs 1500. You don't need a different router. However, unless your exchange has had it's BET rack already installed, you'll have a long wait.

In my opinion it's only worth the grief if you can't get any sort of sync at all.

The only exchange round this way which has the kit in it is Twyford in Berkshire.

Was on the phone to a guy from BT Wholesale again today.

He's saying that my exchange hasn't yet been enabled yet and hasn't had the equipment installed for line bonding yet although he has prioritized the request for my exchange (serving around 1k people) and says that it should be enabled within 2-3 weeks.

Apparently what he's doing is sending an engineer out to bring a new line in and if I don't get a minimum of 2Mbps connection then they'll bring in another one. It's not some sort of special router than combines them both, I get this all through a government grant (free call out costs, free install, free router / adsl modem). All I have to pay is my normal monthly fee.

Just one question, my friend is a BT engineer and he done some work *not officially* for me to move the number of this broadband line out to another location in a garage outside. Will BT still carry out the installation?

Probably noise on the line has triggered BT's profiling system to reduce your speed to increase stability.

Who's your ISP and what exchange are you on?

eta; Ooops, I see you're with BT.

Exchange 'NIAL'

I have a line which is right beside the other. It's on Sky (running on BTs network since LLU is not enabled on any provides on my exchange).

It gets on the router stats:
Down: 2496Kbps
Up: 448Kbps

Line Attenuation:

Down: 37.0dB
Up: 19.5dB

Down: 5.5 Noise Margin
Up: 10 Noise Margin

Speed Test Results:

89ms latency
1.75Mbp/s download
0.36Mbp/s upload

I really doubt though I could get 8Mbps if I'm around 2 miles away from cabinet / exchange.

Hello jdowning And yes indeed you should be able to achieve atleast 4mb's with a 40db Line atten.

With my line 68db True Attenuation I can achieve:

Connection Speed 1536 kbps 736 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.5 db 30.0 db
Noise Margin 6.1 db 7.0 db

Who did you contact concerning BET? And do you have any info whether you can stay with your current provider? Id like to look into getting 2mb

Thanks

Hi mxx, it's currently a government scheme here in Northern Ireland where all rural businesses must be able to receive atleast 2Mbps broadband and if not then they will provide those businesses with line bonding facilities free of charge. BT Retail have only invested into this BT Wholesale product so if you're on another provider then I'm guessing not, sorry frown

Down: 37.0dB

as the man said, should give you at least 6M.

Is the router on the only socket on the line or is there a rats nest of extensions ?

To the OP you need to answer the above question...

I think since your line has been moved to the garage, it's not the master socket.

I wonder if this is BET the OP is on about ? As the others have said, he should be syncing way above that if that attenuation is correct.

In Twyford, the ISP's involved would appear to be BT Business Broadband, and Scotnet.

It's really complicated, for example on the line where I'm on Sky I have about 6 extensions leading off although I broke them all of due to me using VoIP now. But it's very complicated as if I want to get broadband on one extension, I have to keep another extension hooked up. The wiring is completely messed up and it's not as if it's a house, it's a big stone building I live in.

And the outside, I'm not sure if it is a master socket, how can I check? And I think my IP profile is set for about 1.8Mbps on that line.

The wiring is completely messed up

QED. We could see that from the stats TBH.

Zarjaz - the guy's in N. Oireland.

Why not start a new thread in an appropriate place and put a link here. Technical issues perhaps, or General Broadband Chatter ?
