According to SamKnows I can get "BT FTTC", and sure enough other sites show my exchange as FTTC enabled too, however when I try the BT Infinity availability checker it says:
"BT Infinity is not currently due to be rolled out in your area.Register and we will keep you up to date about the BT Infinity rollout. "
And offers me the BT Total Broadband (est 5.5Mb) instead.
Any idea why there's a discrepency?
I'd understand if the BT Infinity site said that its coming soon, but it doesn't, it says that its due to be rolled out in my area.
Thanks
Ben

To have FTTC working, the exchange has to be enabled and the cabinets in your area also have to support FTTC. It looks like that although your exchange is enabled, BT have elected not to upgrade/replace your local cabinets for the time being.
I'm in the same situation and being about 4Km from the exchage find it annoying that many who are nearer to it, and so getting better speed in the first place now also have FTTC.

The Infinity checker may say not available if your line is predicted to be less than 15M so worth a double check elsewhere like http://www.idnet.net/fibre/ or the wholesale line checker at http://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/main.html

MaxDSL - goes as fast as it can and doesn't read the line checker first.

The thing is, I checked some other phone numbers that are near to the exchange and they also say its not available.
I just phoned BT and they checked... they said its being rolled out in my area by it doesn't give a date yet. She said to just keep checking back regularly.... fingers crossed that they choose to do our cabinet.
Thanks
Ben

Its the Southwater exchange.
Southwater Exhange on SamKnows
Ok that really odd. I checked the exchange on SamKnows earlier and it said:
BT Wholesale information
ADSL status: Enabled as of 31/05/2002
ADSL Max status: Enabled as of 31/03/2006
SDSL status: Not available
21CN WBC status: Not available
FTTC status: Available in some areas
And I just checked again and it now says:
BT Wholesale information
ADSL status: Enabled as of 31/05/2002
ADSL Max status: Enabled as of 31/03/2006
SDSL status: Not available
21CN WBC status: Enabled as of 01/01/1970
FTTC status: Not available
Note that FTTC now says "No Available" and 21CN says it was enabled in 1970! (I think thats a 0 timet value for any programmers out there, or unix epoch for unix fans).
I still have both browser windows open, so I can see that it has changed in the past hour or so!

It stills says "Available in some areas" for me on Victoria Exchange.

It has changed just by now, it says it's not available.

Just wait for the 2038 bug

So those streets don't yet have FTTC cabinets installed either.

Unfortunately you can't talk to OpenReach who install the technology (that can be used by multiple ISPs), you can only talk to BT Retail who will sell you Infinity (over 15meg) or the ADSL/ADSL2+ Broadband products.
James from ADSL24 was able to tell me last year which PCP my line was on (via private message) and confirmed the date the BT checker said was all he had access to.
I believe we all have to keep waiting.

Now says Sept 2011.

Just thought I'd give a bit of hope to everyone still waiting, Reading Central originally had an availability Date of December 2010, which got moved out to March 2011, only to be moved to September 2011 (skipping June for some weird reason) two weeks ago. The Infinity Map proudly proclaimed it was available for a while, and then moved the date to June - funnily enough the step that the official checker had skipped.
My cab was plonked down last October, and various busy bees have been all over various cabinets and mine since then, until it went very quiet in January. I couldn't quite believe the latest September date, but it even appeared in the official Openreach list as an update.
Lo and behold, today saw the September date roll forward to a March 16th enablement date on the official checker. Samknows had confidently proclaimed March 1st for a while, and is currently showing March 11th, so overall was far more accurate than anything BT had.
The moral is that it is pretty much pot luck - the time between installation of the cab and availability was around 6 month in my case (which is pretty long), and the BT dates were all over the shop until a week before implementation. If anyone had a December/March date, has a cab outside and has since been pushed out to September, I'd hazard a guess that they won't have to wait that long...
