Can anyone recommend a router for the vdsl modem on aquis at a good price
|
|
|
No router is provided by Aquiss, however a free VDSL2 Active modem is supplied. We recommend either the Zyxel NBG460N, Netgear WGR614 or Netgear WNR1000 to work alongside the supplied free VDSL modem to extend home network setups, such as wireless requirements.

If you contact Aquiss I am sure they will advise you of their preferences and why.
They seem to be very accommodating with all the questions I have asked them.

Any cable router that supports PPPoE should work just fine.
I have a Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH, which has been excellent (I am also on Aquiss). Robertos has one too, but not this model (I think he has the WZR-HP-G300N, but I could be wrong).

I bought a Linksys E3000 when I swapped to Aquiss FTTC and I am very impressed with it so far.
I wanted Gigabyte ethernet, simultaneous dual band WIFI and the reliability of Linksys/Cisco so although it wasn't the cheapest I decided it was worth it as I am a heavy user and very reliant on my internet connection.

I'm on IDNet but that's irrelevant - got one of these. Went live 18 Feb and perfect so far.
Prices vary day to day, mine was £23.56 with free delivery, they've been as high as £28.99 since, yesterday was £23.40.
Also available around £20 plus delivery from eBuyer.

Apparently so, but I ignored the CD and jsust used the setup wizards from the standard GUI.
I wonder if Spasch means the CD gives you a choice?
Surely it would be best to try the standard firmware before alternatives? If you don't, you never find out what it can do. And seeing as you have problems already ....

My trusty Linksys WRT54G runs DD-WRT, but yes I would obviously not start tinkering till I`m 100% certain my wifi issues are sorted.

No, DD-WRT was installed on mine as the default. It is possible to load different firmware that Buffalo provide (in the manual it calls the DD-WRT firmware 'advanced' and the other as 'basic', IIRC). Both are supported by Buffalo. No idea where the other firmware is as I like the DD-WRT firmware, so that's what I'm running.

Which model Buffalo? How do you know whose f/w you have anyway? Mine just says WHR-G300N Ver.1.82 (R1.12/B1.00)

I have the WZR-HP-G300NH.. When I open the web interface, the top right hand corner says:
Firmware: DD-WRT v24SP2-EU-US (08/19/10) std
Time: 12:46:30 up 4 days, 3:57, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00

I wondered that. Different kit from what was being discussed.

I wondered that. Different kit from what was being discussed. I know that - I was just pointing out that my Buffalo does run DD-WRT firmware, as MrGrumpy was asking, and it's reasonable to assume that it will run on the unit he ordered.

Just FYI if you look here http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index you can check which routers are supported. Like i said earlier I bought a Linksys WRT many moons ago and run DD-WRT firmware although i can see its been updated since. Its not the be all and end all but there is alot of functionality added, which can be missing from stock firmware. For example SNMP which allows you to grab stats such as uptime, upload, download etc and make pretty graphs . Used to waste many an hour doing such things when i ran a homeserver just for the hell of it

That's the site where in my earlier post I gave you the link to where it shows the WHR-G300N, in my "Apparently so".

The post of mine to which you replied contained a link to the list showing it . No assumption needed .
