Hi
I'm on Cab 11 on SMSU exchange and the shiny FTTC cab has been humming for a month now, but availability checkers still say availability will be 30th Sept 2011. I just wondered what are the experiences of others - how long between when your FTTC cab got powered up and when FTTC actually became available to you?
Thanks
Bert
EDIT: I just checked SamKnows... It had been saying SMSU RFS was 01/03/11, then after 1/3 it said "Available in some areas" which I took to mean the exchange is live. Now it sayd RFS is 11/03/11 - today. Anyone know what this means is happening? Is this data solid or would they be just rolling the date back because they have no solid info?

check bt wholesale checker what does that say what predicted speed ?

Hi
I'm on SMSSF th Stony Stratford exchange.
I live in Crownhill and my dates have been mimicking yours.
As you said, mine has also changed on SamKnows from Sept. 2011 to 11/3/11, ie today!
Wholesale checker still saying September.
I think it s worth checking with your ISP to see what they know but I think it is iminent now.

Hi
I'm on the SMHY exchange and my cabinet had power installed about 1 week ago and i was able to order Bt infinity yesterday.
|
|
|
Ty a different ISP checker - Infinity seems to be the last to catch up.
|
|
|
I live in Great Holm and have noticed the date has also moved to Sept.
I had a contact in Milton Keynes Council last year who told be it would go live on the 31st of March, I've emailed him again today for some feedback, I'll update you guys when and if I find out.
The best stie to check is the BT wholesale site, its
http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/ADSLChecker.Teleph...
But to be honest I think it's a case of wait and see, I'm not convincit the Sept date is correct, BT would not install and power up the equipment for it just to sit there doing nothing for 6 months.

....BT would not install and power up the equipment for it just to sit there doing nothing for 6 months.
I agree.
Are you on the Stony or Wolverton exchange? Could you do a check on Sam Knows and see if your date is also 11/3/2011? Be interesting to compare.
Knowing how it works is completely different to understanding how it works.

I am on the Stony exchange and located in Two Mile Ash. My dates are following the same pattern as mentioned in this thread - currently sitting at September.
I think like has been mentioned in other threads it will probably be the case that you check it one day and it will be ready to go. The logic of putting the equipment in etc then leaving it for so long doesnt make sense.

I'm on the Stony exchange, SAMs tells me it's the 11th of March but BT Wholesale says Sept.

yuna
your lucky, on smhy wycombe and my cabinet isnt activated yet, also noted new tall cabinets are very unevenly spread (I assume a legacy issue) some less than 400 yards apart others over 2KM apart.
Yes you guessed it my cabinet is over 1km away ( via trefor map and confirmed by 2 bt engineers) yet I am nowhere near the edge of town. Forecast speed is about 13Mb if BT want to compete with cable (which is in my street) they will need to fit some infill cabinets to even come close to cables speeds

I agree we need a little patience, but it isn't easy!
My brother lives up the A5 near paulerspury, in a tiny village called Alderton. Probably not even 40 houses. But because they have a little mini exchange for the two villages he gets a rock solid 7Mbps.
No chance of fibre and probably no LLU, but a solid 7Mbps all the same.
I live in the middle of a new "city" population circa 200,000 plus. What do I get? An unstable 1Mbps at best and an exchange over 5km away. 5km!!!! In a city!
If it wasn't so absurd I'd probably cry!
Oh well, better late than never I suppose.
Knowing how it works is completely different to understanding how it works.

Patience. We had BT wiring up our local cab in June 2010. The service didn't go live until late December.
|
|
|
|
Some good news, checkout Sam Knows and the link I listed for BT Wholesale.
Great Holm will be available from the 23rd of March, however when we actually see it will depend on the ISP your with.
MK Council have confirmed over 26 ISPs have joined in on the FTTC upgrades so it's a matter of time, possibly weeks before we get to see the results, or have the option to upgrade to the faster speeds.

Just ordered BT Infinity.
The exchange was enabled today and it all went through fine. I live in the Great Holm region.

What exchange is that?

That's the Stony Stratford exchange

[censored]? How can someone on Great Holm get infinity, and BT tell me I cannot receive it. Can the Great Holm person confirm that they actually have infinity and it's all working?!
If so I'm going to get a little nuts [censored] BT!

Hi MrBriz, welcome to the forums .
What does this checker say about your phone number? If the estimated speed is below 15Mbps it doesn't show up on the Infinity checker.

Hi RobertoS,
The checker says the following "downstream line speed of 40Mbps and upstream line speed of 11.5Mbps"
If I got that I think I might wet myself a little!
It's frustrating the date has been pushed back so many times. I remember the date being early 2010, and I believe it's been pushed back 4 or 5 times since then.
|
|
|
|
From what I've been told by a couple of BT OpenReach engineers in the area is that my cabinet is fully powered and has fibre running to it. They have said it's ready to go.
It's so frustrating as my connection isn't great (well actually... it's gotten better recently. I get 400KBps down and about 230KBps up, I used to only get 256KBps down and 230KBps up)
|
|
|
At least it means your cabinet is getting it . Not unusual for the FTTC ones to be humming away to themselves for a fair while before they become available. It could just be part of BT Infinity marketing plans, I've seen that, where you could order FTTC from other suppliers but not BT.
Trouble is most are more expensive, or have more restrictions than Infinity. There's a list on my website, and that page has a link to a spreadsheet with basic details of them all, produced by orly and yarwell from here.

I think the company that looks the most interesting is web tapestry.
I've spoken to someone who uses them and he's very happy with the service, plus I've spoken to one of the sales team and they answered all the questions I asked well enough (no traffic shaping, 45GB FUP peak times plus they can tweak the tariff if you wish for a small price per month, unlimited DL outside peak, unlimited upload all times)
Hopefully BT get their finger out and get it all up and running.

Stantonbury here, RFS on my cab was moved about much like yours 4-5 times.
Then it was active for ages about 6 weeks hummed n everything. but couldn't order, frustrating to say the least. as my line is 1mb.
However 2 weeks ago mine allowed me to order! a week today more to wait.....
Just saying, wont be long! patience!

Well hopefully I'll get it soon.... it's just an agonising slow wait! Grrr

OK I've looked more deeply into it now.
It seems (as far as I can see) there are 3 cabinets on Great Holm. Tow of them have their DSLAM pairs.
I have checked all the postcodes on Great Holm (or at least the ones I can find) and found out that 55% of Great Holm has BT Infinity already active and running, and 44% doesn't!
From what I can see it's only the one cabinet that is stopping that 44% from having Infinity (seems odd... I'm sure there must be another cabinet I cannot find)
See this map for the positions of the Old BT Cabinets (purple pins), the new DSLAM Cabinets (pink pins), and the postcodes served and not served (green and blue dots)
The two red pins are somewhere either BT doesn't recognise the postcode for (1-35 Petworth), or somewhere it says BT Infinity isn't due to be put in place (1 Haddon)

Hi,
When people above say 'humming away' - do they mean they've seen the power getting installed, talked to a nearby BT Engineer or can you physically hear them humming when live?
The contractor was out doing the concrete bases last week, installed the cabinets on Monday and finished the concreting around them yesterday so i'm hoping BT will be around putting the equipment in them soon!
Thanks,
Ian
|
|
|
|
Physically hear them.
|
|
|
|
Ah cool - thanks.
I'll have to keep checking!
|
|
|
|
I've finally gotten BT to install my cabinet =)
They did it about 3 weeks ago, and it's going to take them 6 weeks to get power to it ([censored]!)
So all I have to do is wait 3 weeks for power.... then I bet I'll have to wait longer for them to actually get around and connect it. Never mind, it's going forward slowly.

Postcode checks are useless because this is not accurate, or did you mean address checks? For example, most postcodes within an FTTC enabled exchange will show available, even if that street is served from a cab that is not upgraded. Don't know why BT do it that way as it's confusing.
Anyway, see the map below for all planned fibre cab locations on the Stony Stratford exchange and Great Holm in particular. Locations are accurate to a postcode level so may be slightly inaccurate but usually very close. Green dots indicate postcodes that are on an 'enabled to be' cab, orange dots indicate postcodes on a 'not enabled to be' cab.

From one James to another, thanks
I guess you have information that I do not. I don't have any phone numbers so I could not check, I guess that cabs 27 and 29 aren't yet enabled yet then.
At least I finally got them (BT) to install the DSLAM for cab 28! Hopefully they will get it powered and connected soon.
Thanks again.
Regards,
James

No problem. If anyone else on this exchange or another needs a visual representation let me know and I'll try my best.

Damn you're quick to respond!
Again it's nice to see there are tools out there that have this information, shame they are not accessible to the general public, at least we'd be more informed if they were.
Again, thanks.

No tools I'm afraid, just raw data. Those maps are entirely our own development, based on data from various sources and lots of time consuming work to tie everything together.

So I'm in Gatcombe great holm no infinity here yet, or a date for the turn on. Wish they would hurry up my dongles faster. Postcode MK8 9EA

Phew....about 2.5 months after the cabinets went in and over a month since they got power connected, there was an engineer at the cabinet with a laptop yesterday morning - said he was uploading the software into it, which was the last stage of making them live.
I checked last night and you can hear the fans inside so it's on!
What's people's experience of how long it now takes before being able to order?
The BT Wholesale checker still doesn't mention FTTC and the BT Infinity site says no plans within the next 6 months (which is how it's been all along).
When i've spoken to people at BT, they insist that we are not getting it, but the cabinet is clearly there and now live - hope it just appears available to order soon and there isn't a data problem resulting in us not being able to order!

OK So the cab is up. It's been powered!
I have an email contact inside BT who sent me this yesterday "The cabinet has passed all its external tests this afternoon and has been passed through to be made available for orders. It should be available for customer orders by the middle of next week"
w00t w00t!!
Now time to choose ISP..... BT are really doing a big number on a lot of other ISPs by removing the FUP.
Can anyone shed any light on this? Has anyone who already has infinity tell me how much they have downloaded, and if they have seen any issues with connection speed?
The only other thing is BT have an 18 month contract, which puts me off a little....
Guess not long to wait now

Any chance of sharing that? - you can PM me.

That's my problem too (apart from the cabinet not being enabled and nothing showing in the checker yet!).
I really would like a block of static ip's, but BT is offering unlimited transfer, free install, you can get cashback from Quidco, they have 3 month cheap/free offers and you get free calls and openzone minites chucked in.
If I were go to another ISP, I wouldn't get the Quidco, calls or openzone mins, wouldn't get unlimited (a problem if one day I need to restore my Crashplan online backups) and would have to pay for the install so it's just not worth it.

Here we go then Guys & Gals, I'm in Gatcombe Great holm & Bt's site has allowed me to order infinity today. I'm being installled on the 28th September. Interestingly I was on Stony Stratford Exchange & in the process of installation, I'm being moved over to Fishermead according to the acceptance paperwork.
|
|
|
Just spoke to Bt about this changing to Fishermead exchange, apparently it will show it when you place the order, but when infinity gets activated it will be onthe Stony Stratford exchange as it is now, roll on the 28th September
|
|
|
|
I've just checked the BT checker thing and I too can get infinity. I just have to keep my self from snap ordering from BT!
I'm still wary of their customer service (or lack of it) and I'm worried I'll go with BT and then be stuck in a contract with [censored] service....
|
|
|
|
Who's your current ISP? How fast does it sync?
|
|
|
|
Plenty of ISP choice.
|
|
|
|
From what I have been told there is no ISP choice, You go with BT if your in MK or you don't get infinity speeds till late 2012. I've been with my ISP since the internet was born in the UK in 1994 & I'm sorry to have to leave them, but BT will not be allowing them or any ISP access till 2012. I'm still on schedule according BT website for 28th September Woop Woop
|
|
|

BT are not the only ones to offer FTTC. Their "Infinity" product is simply their own name for FTTC. It is nothing special, as all other ISP's can also offer this, like ourselves for example. You can in fact often get another ISP's FTTC service well before the Infinity service even though it's the same physical connection.

if cab is due september then shoud be getting speed estimates off the checkers by www.bt.com as that gives an estimated actual speed -- post of not bt line -- will tell you inf can si close to b ordered from
