Cabinet and other street furniture pics reqd. please

[link to this post]

I've just added this page to my website, to help people coming here to compare what they have seen with known street furniture. It seems sensible to have such a resource and I'm not aware of one anywhere else.

There have been many pictures of the smaller FTTC cabs (and the number of lines they support), and also several people asking "Is this an FTTC cab" and it hasn't been.

It would take ages to find all these and also contact the posters.

If anyone can give me links to such pics that they have taken, (or anything else useful), so that I can download them and put them on the site that would be great. An acknowledgement of the supplier would be added if you would like that.

P.S. Feel free to use any of my pics on http://www.fibreforsaddleworth.co.uk/updates.php

There are a number of 128 line FTTC cabs (the smaller ones) pictured.

Dead right it is! frown

I thought I had got the right one and was getting tired.

For some reason I can't get the one it should be off my phone. Maybe a reboot of the laptop will fix it, but it just isn't showing up on Bluetooth even though it is there on the camera just where the others were.

That's great James, thanks smile. I'll choose one tomorrow. Also that PCP15 that shows on the left of _3.jpg is one I haven't got, so I might go for that one.

I remember a few posts not long ago about some other smaller ones as well.

Any idea what that odd thing is in the middle of PCP14_2? I'm putting things like that in "Other". to eliminate them, as we've had several pics of traffic light controllers and suchlike. So if people can see for themselves ... smile.

Fixed and replaced.

Laptop reboot solved it. I think the blame for not being able to upload that one lies in the Nokia Phone Browser software. I'd deleted and re-found the connection to the phone in Windows Explorer a couple of times, but it looks like the content was cached in that garbage. Even though the phone connection was showing in its own right under "Computer", not under NPB frown.

I would guess the 60's or 70's looking at the design of the box. I guess one clue is to see if it's marked BT/Telecom (with the old T logo) or Post Office (P.O.) Telephones. I know the manhole cover in front of the one close to me is P.O. Telephones but the cab has no mark on it other than it's number.

Hmm, does knowing this much make me sad? smile Should we start up a new "cab spotter" instead of train spotter title?

Cabs from GPO days were cast iron.

The cab you are talking about here, I would put at 70's - 80's, & is made of fibre glass.

Modern ones a pressed steel, & get nice rusty holes in them (load of rubbish).

Yep, as I said, 70's - 80's.

They could be a pain sometimes, refitting the door. Get 3 clips engaged ok, but the 4th won't lock. Undo a couple, then one of the others wouldn't lock.
I never did like then.

Also, the triangluar heads weren't very deep, & if they gor worn & rounded on the corners, the cab key wouldn't grip, & just jumped off.

Hence Robertos 'another old cab' is a Cabinet Cross Connection 3 with enhanced security. smile

If we are to get this right. a modernish pcp near a pub is a ccc7. New small cab is ccc 5a and another pcp is a ccc6

Special points awarded for photos of a 4a as I have never seen one and half a point for a 2 and a 5. smile

Also, the triangluar heads weren't very deep, & if they gor worn & rounded on the corners, the cab key wouldn't grip, & just jumped off.

The triangle locks presumably means you can open them with a service key from Poundland!
Hence Robertos 'another old cab' is a Cabinet Cross Connection 3 with enhanced security. smile
Does that need a square "train-door" key?

Thanks, but already got the cabinet ones. Not sure I want to put the groundworks up.

I should have made it clear in my opening post I just want one of each type for identification, so as long as every one I have is a decent pic that's fine. I've wasted a few people's time now, like yours frown. Sorry.

BT put £3million into my town to enable 100% cabinets before Sept 11, so they have been working pretty fast, cabinets are poppin up daily, and they usually go live within a week or 2 later.

I was connected to one of those tatty old GPO ones until a couple of weeks ago. It's just been re-shelled in preparation for FTTC. My ADSL connections didn't even drop during the change.

Unfortunately the council seem to have got the wrong end of the stick when Openreach applied for planning permission. They applied a restriction that the existing cabinet must be removed when the new fibre cabinet is installed frown

I've got four or five to add, just it's a bit laborious as I'm not a master of photo editing. The differences of photo type between pics are considerable and I need to sit down and concentrate for a while, which isn't easy at the moment. Should get it done this week.

From later posts it seems that one is covered though - it is easy to add descriptions such as colour and lock info to the caption of the main pic.

NTL is CableTel smile

CableTel (HQ was in guildford) bought National Transcommunications Ltd (a TV transmitter business) and renamed the company after the initials NTL. Then it went on a buying spree and bought most of the competitors. Eventually merging with Telewest.

Then it wanted to buy VirginMobile - so it sold off the National Transcommunications business as it wasn't cable or telephone (more corporate) and that is what we now know as Arqiva.

Then after buying Virgin Mobile, the NTL:telewest group renamed themselves Virgin Media. (I've seen the history lesson in VM's HQ building!).

Manhole covers and similar here all have "CATV" written on them.

Any more photos inside in the fttc cabinets?

[re: RobertoS] [link to this post]

Great collection of cabinet photos, RobertoS!

Are you collecting mug-shots of the layout and the gubbins inside the two Huawei cabinet models, and the ECI?

This site has a shot inside the FTTC cabinet that Rutland Telecom is using [1]. Do you know who manufactures that cabinet? And what make of DSLAM is Rutland using? The Huawei SmartAX, the same as BT?

Trefor.Net has two shots inside the smaller Huawei cabinet [2], but they are too small to zoom in clarity.

It would be useful to see a close up of the kit in the FTTC rack units. In the larger Huawei cabinet, the kit appears to be mounted vertically.

Is anyone on this forum installing the cabinet equipment?

cheers!

I have a few more people have sent me, but the problem that is putting me off is the formatting of the pics to a uniform style, as I don't have sophisticated software for the purpose. As you can see from the higgledy-piggledy layout already. The "Photo gallery" addon to the website is a bit sensitive.

I suppose the insides would be interesting, but the main purpose is to help people identify what they are looking at, when they are wondering if they have found their PCP and FTTC cabs.

I don't think trefor has it quite right even now. The second pic of his certainly doesn't look like a Huawei FTTC one, but the third definitely is - with the DSLAM on the left. Ours has two banks of connectors for the copper where that only seems to have one. Not all were wired up to the copper to the PCP though.

Trefor.Net has two shots inside the smaller Huawei cabinet [2], but they are too small to zoom in clarity.

Thats actually the larger, 288 capacity Huawei cab smile

The second picture on trefor just looks like a copper PCP, not an FTTC one.

Cheers for the clarification guys, even if I'm really confused now!

adsl24.. It's specifically photos inside the cabinets that I'm trying to track down.. I'm trying to identify the DSLAM kit that Openreach is using.

Huawei has launched a new range of VDSL2 line cards that offers a higher density of ports (64 VDSL2 ports) per card. If the cabinet DSLAMs can accommodate either 4 or 8 of the current 48 port cards, and these provide either 144 or 288 VDSL2 subscriber lines per cabinet, then presumably when the newer linecards are installed, this capacity will increase to 384 lines for the larger cabinet.

RobertoS.. A popular tool for normalising images to a standard size and quality for web sites is the excitingly-named 'convert' tool from the ImageMagick suite. It's open source, and available for Windows, Linux, Mac, etc.. [1]

The tool can do all sorts of conversions.. transcoding to and from different image formats, changes in dimensions and compression rate, and has numerous filters for weird-and-wonderful purposes.

Some of the photos you've collected on your site are very high quality (8Mb+).. But the browser in this clapped-out laptop grinds to a halt trying to render a webpage full of them. Convert can reduce the scale and quality ..

When re-scaling with convert, if you supply a new 'x' dimension (e.g. 800 pixels) but omit the 'y' dimension then convert will scale proportionately along the Y axis. This ensures that all the images fit nicely on the same web page.

Convert can batch process images, too!

Well that's the sales pitch for ImageMagick over with!

Cheers,a

I have a few more people have sent me, but the problem that is putting me off is the formatting of the pics to a uniform style, as I don't have sophisticated software for the purpose.

I believe you're on Windows, so IrfanView could be what you're after. Completely free.

I use it to batch resize JPG's, or batch convert between formats. Nice and quick.

288 = 6 * 48 port card with 6 * GigE fibres.

I don't think trefor has it quite right even now.

He seems to amended it now, but yes, the top two photo's are just 'copper' cabs.
