Updated FTTC/P rollout schedule on Openreach site

[link to this post]

I have just looked at the Openreach site and was surprised at the change in the rollout lists from the last time I looked (on 14/11) there have been another 30 live exchanges and another 203 added to the Future exchanges.

Now live ABERKENFIG, AMERSHAM, BATH KINGSMEAD, BISHOP AUCKLAND
CALNE, CHELTENHAM, CHESHAM, CHISLEHURST, CROWNHILL, DARTON
HESKETH BANK, IRLAM, KIRBY MUXLOE, LINTHORPE, LONGTON, LANCASHIRE
LOUGHGIEL, MARTON, CLEVELAND, PADGATE, PLYMOUTH. PONTELAND
SANDERSTEAD, SHOREDITCH, SOUTHALL, THATCHAM, TWICKENHAM
UNDERCLIFFE, WALTHAMSTOW, WEMBLEY, WERRINGTON, WEST WICKHAM.

This is quite an impressive rollout now. Another 108 in the coming soon list ( much shorter than before) all with dates up to Mar 2012. This shorter list may prove to be more accurate than before!

Then 504 in the future list, 164 of which weren't in before, too many new ones to list. A significant number of these are not large centres of population so our hopes that areas outside Virgin coverage would be covered may be come to be reality.
See http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/ for the full list

Total rollout now covers 1274 exchanges, I only hope most cabinets in each exchange are being covered, rather than 1 or 2 to claim coverage rather than deliver coverage.

Still no use ...

I put my second house in and that exchange along with 30 or so surrounding it are "Not currently in roll out plans". Still stuck with 8Mb Max

It's a percentage of lines covered in an exchanges reach before it's RFS but I don't think it's very high - 40% rings a bell.

Not sure what is impressive about it. It was just that they had not updaed the lists for months so those that had been enabled during the year were moved in block to the live list. The coming soon list got shorter because of that. THey have though not moved any from the future exchanges to the coming soon list

Bob

They appear to be changing the live list as exchanges go live, there were also 9 I spotted that had been added to the coming soon list since 14/11 although all were in Cornwall.

I assume you are in Rutland, which appears to have no large towns in it just two small ones (oakham and Uppingham) so the lack of plans doesn't surprise me.
There is a BDUK contract being offered there to cover 20 odd excahnges, So I wouldn't expect BT to start rollout until they know who has got the money.
I think all the exchanges are covered by the BDUK funding so could be a fast rollout as the area is so small once the contract is placed with someone.

There will be more exchanges announced next year proably mid January. Aslo as CC submit there LBP's and get their bduk funding, those tenders will be awarded next year.

BT is likely to win the majority so alot more exchanges will appear on the lists.

The next list of exchanges was announced today, now 1452 in total with 697 already live and another 506 in to be completed by June 2012, (if they manage to do them all)I expect these will cover the majority of the population.

So BDUK could use the resource from Sep 2012 onwards, I wonder if it will be first placed contacts done first?

I expect these will cover the majority of the population.

BT has 5,500 exchanges, broken down into:
- 1,539 market 3 exchanges, covering 77% population
- 660 market 2 exchanges covering 10% population
- 3,388 market 1 exchanges covering 12% population

If 1452 get completed *and* they cover close to 100% of their subscribers, we might indeed be getting close to a majority coverage, in strict terms (ie >50%). But it isn't close to 100% coverage of the converted exchanges yet, so i think there's a way to go yet. Personally, I'd want another 800+ exchanges, with better fill-in, before I started to think that a majority were covered.
So BDUK could use the resource from Sep 2012 onwards, I wonder if it will be first placed contacts done first?

BT recently brought forward their own end-date from 2015 to 2014, so I guess that's nearer the date you should use.

However, I guess any BDUK-funded exchanges will just be added to the plans as they are ordered - and the extra BDUK funding could well help make them more viable than some of the ones that BT will do alone. That could bump them up the scheme a bit.

For example, the Cornish and NI funding has certainly helped bumped them up the priority.

In fact, as I think about it more, there are certain advantages to doing BDUK exchanges first. The government can't withold money that's already been spent!

My Cornish exchange appears to be getting FTT-something (the lists say FTTP but the cabinet they've installed looks precisely like an FTTC one) imminently (Dec 2011 is the date). BT were installing a cabinet a couple of weeks ago, so hopefully it'll be turned on soon.

This was an exchange that was previously scheduled to get it by roughly August 2012, so obviously BT are getting a move on.

Interestingly BT's postcode checker seems to think I can get FTTC now, but nothing yet for my phone number.

Ive seen maps from BT that show their plans for a local area without bduk funds and with them, coverage goes from being about 60% of the population to about 90% coverage if they win the tender.

So by mid to end of 2012 expect many local CC to have awardered their tenders which will likely go to BT, those exchanges will all appear on lists.

Whereabouts in Cornwall are you mate?

I'm in Truro and to my surprise when I checked the other week the exchange and cabinet had both gone live, so hopefully it should not be to long of a wait now. They have really pulled their finger out over the last few months I must admit.

I'm in a village that is closer to St Austell and Bodmin than Truro. If you look at the Openreach map all of the exchanges around me (except the two that already have fibre) are scheduled for March, whereas my exchange is scheduled for December. I'm not sure why my village is closer to getting it.

I'm not actually in Cornwall right now so I don't actually know whether the cabinet appears to be on (the ELGIN site suggests BT were laying/preparing ducts for power last week) or whether they've put other cabinets in the village yet.

I'm waiting for the self-congratulatory press release from BT/Superfast Cornwall to say how brilliant they are for doing it months before they were going to..

The rollout in truro is currently a bit strange, near the police station, part of malpas, part of highertown, newbridge area, parts of threemilestone. Then theres the kenwyn hill area going out as far as shortlanesend.

I have an installed booked for Thursday for my place of work. Hopefully this wont be cancelled like my initial
installation date at home.

Fibre is still pricey, so I think I will give it a miss.

Looking on the list it says FTTC.

Range of choices are FTTC, FTTP or FTTC/FTTP where they will mix both in different
areas of an exchange. Any individual area will have one or the other.

Do you really consider £20-25 a bit pricey for a 25Mb + product?

Doubt if it makes a profit at that price!.

If you already have a decent speed from being close to the exchange you may not get the option as city centre cabs seem to be often missed. But in the suburbs this improvement to 25Mb+ from 2-6Mb and much better upload will be a draw.

It is not the price so much it is the the limits.
at the moment I am paying just inder £20 a month for unlimited broadband, no traffic management either.
sure i am only getting 3.5-4 megabits, but I can download what I want , when I want.

every single Fibre product I have seen so far got limits

According to Bt 25,000 premises will have fibre here, that is the majority of the city. I live a fair distance away from the exchange, but a mate of mine lives a couple of streets away.

I found out today in our local paper that a wireless system is now up and running around here, giving pretty good speeds for a decent price. i been following their progress for a while now as the system have been used in rural areas with the system mounted on churches, the one here is mounted on our Cathedral.

Could be a chance to get rid of my phone line as well, the only bugbear is the £100 installation cost, but then fibre costs that.

Quite a few FTTC offers are shown as unlimited and some installations are free. There is a list of infinity suppliers someone, Orly I think, keeps linked from a post somewhere here.

Using BT as the benchmark to beat, their unlimited package is free if you have a line at a cost of £25 PCM including free evening and weekend calls. But need line rental on top.

Not much more than you pay now, so I presume you mean you don't need the extra speed.

Hereford date says June 2012, so will be available somewhere in the city before Sep if they keep the present improvement in dates up.

Only Bt retail supplies infinity as it is a trade name, there is unlimited and unlimited. i seen what some ISPs unlimited is, you find out it is not as unlimited as it sounds. then you got traffic management on top.

Using BT as the benchmark to beat, their unlimited package is free if you have a line at a cost of £25 PCM including free evening and weekend calls. But need line rental on top.

This is the problem with Bt, Talk Talk and no doubt Sky when they do fibre, they want you to sign up for their phone service as well. I am sorry but I don't want their phone service, I am happy with the phone service I have got.

Not much more than you pay now, so I presume you mean you don't need the extra speed.

i don't need 40Megabits that is for sure or any where near it, I don't see the point. I would prefer a cheaper service with a slower speed, something like 8-10megabits would be nice.

which is why I am thinking of this new wireless system that is available here.

Hereford date says June 2012, so will be available somewhere in the city before Sep if they keep the present improvement in dates up.

this is Bt we are talking about, no doubt it will come in 2013, maybe 2014. there is a article in our free local paper that came through the door today, our paper is making a song and a dance about it, saying how good it will be for Hereford. lets see how many people will be able to afford it or need it.

No doubt we will be having more [censored] from Bt through our doors next year

My exchange (LNILC) has been live for fibre for the best part of a year but I still have no date for my cab which is apparently destined to be an FTTP install. So just because your exchange gets activated doesn't guarantee any kind of fibre service. Don't want to sound overly negative, but your 2013 estimate may not be far from the truth depending on how are you are from the exchange.
