Checker updates due end of Jan for 80Mb FTTC products

"We intend to perform the uplift of eMLC speed estimates as part of its regularly scheduled data refresh over the weekend of 28th/29th January 2012."

After this date the checker will begin to show speed estimates for FTTC capable lines up to 80Mb down and 20Mb up respectively.

We (ADSL24) have a number of existing FTTC customers who are taking part in the actual 80/20 trials in late January so will give you some feedback on how they are performing once they are upgraded. We then plan to launch the service for new and existing as soon as Openreach confirm we can do so. We're still not sure what the price will be, but no doubt Openreach/Wholesale will increase the monthly charge, but by what we don't yet know.

Just for curiosity, are you only trialing this with users who already achieve the current maximum sync speeds, or are you including users who sync at say somewhere between 25 Mb to 30 Mb, just to see if they can also obtain anything over 40 Mb??

There would be no point. The new product is being done in two stages. Firstly the upgrade to the 17a higher frequencies to accommodate the higher bandwidth which should almost be complete, if it isn't already. And secondly, removing the maximum sync rate of 40/10 and replacing it with a 80/20 cap. However, if a line cant reach the existing cap, extending the cap would make zero difference.

The more pertinent change was the upgrade to the 17a profile that people have been witnessing, which produced an increase in sync speed for most people. Some people who weren't syncing at the maximum 40Mbit before are now doing so, but others only seen a small increase and still don't hit the 40mbit limit.

If a line still can't achieve the maximum limit of 40Mbit on 17a, then the new product will make absolutely no difference. It would be like increasing the speed limit on a road to 80mph, when the car itself can only reach a top speed of 35mph.

Those customers will have to wait for 30a, or vectoring to be deployed before seeing any more speed increases. Whenever that may be.

We are trialling a range of customers over 15Mb however as they are all on profile 17c already there is prob not much extra to gain

Wouldn't have thought that moving to 30MHz bandwidth will do much for anyone who can't achieve 40Mbps on 17a.

Vectoring, however, should be interesting.

when is vectoring due to be introduced?

We gained a few Mbit download going to 17a but lost a few Mbit on the upload. Looked like a simple frequency shift to move more into the download range. We're about 600 metres from the cabinet

I like this sound of this!

James will capped profiles be available?

I would eg. rather have a line at 40mbit/sec not been pushed 100% and as such stable low crc errors etc. then one at say 68mbit pushed as far as it can go.
