BT INFINITY

Hello All,
My house is a long way from the telephone exchange hence my download speed varies from bad to mediocre. 2844 Kbps maximum last September. This followed a communication from BT stating that they had improved the service and speeds would increase, which generally they did. My record of BT speed tester results show a similar maximum (2848 Kbps October 2011) At about the same time the "For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps was showing. The test today has it at 1200-4000 Kbps.

Yesterday Think Broadband recorded a speed of 894 Kbps.

BT are now offering BT Infinity, of course at greater cost. Am I being naive in thinking that when fibre optic cables were installed from the exchange to the cabinet that the service would automatically improve? Or are BT operating a two tier service - copper and fibre optic cable or just deliberately slowing the service, unless one pays to upgrade. Also I notice they mention a £25.00 one of "activation" fee. What is this for?

The previous upgrade would have been to ADSL2+ which just runs over your normal copper cable. On longer lines only a marginal improvement is usually seen.

Infinity runs over fibre optic to the cabinet and then the broadband connection is ran from there to your home over the existing copper. They are 2 completely different services.

Put your number into the BT Wholesale availability checker and it'll tell you that FTTC speed you're expected to get if your cabinet has been enabled.

The one off fee is yo cover the cost of the modem and technician visit.

If you order Infinity option 2 the £25 charge is waived. TBH the £25 on option 1 is very cheap. Most other ISP's are charging as much at £100 for activation.

Not naive, you just haven't happened to see a description of what is actually involved.

BT do not run fibre to your cabinet, they run it to a new one near to it. Then they link the two with copper. Your existing broadband is not affected, as it is coming down the copper from the exchange to the pre-existing cabinet.

So for Infinity it is an upgrade to get broadband down the fire to the new cabinet. Your phone stays on the copper, and the fibre broadband gets onto your phone line through the link between the two cabinets.

Infinity is just the name for the FTTC service offered by BT Retail. Just like ordinary broadband there are many different suppliers.

As I don´t use BT at all & as I have a Sky TV+HD account, I use Sky for my phone line & Talk package as I have their unlimited Talk Package with Sky, as I also phone up the Sates & some European Countries as well, & BT don´t offer this facility as I do chat on the phone quite a bit - so that´s why I don´t use BT!

Yes BT Infinity do charge a £25.00 monthly fee, but you´ll need to sign up to their 18 month contract for it, as that is very cheap & as I pay £30.00 for my Eclipse Internet Home Pro ADSL broadband on an Innerleithen BT ADSL exchange as I can´t get fibre as yet - My down-streams do actually average around 6.95MB/Sec 24/7 as I do live 473 meters from the BT Innerleithen Exchange!

Once BT Infinity has been rolled out in our area - I´m most likely to upgrade to fibre through Eclipse Internet http://www.eclipse.net.uk/fibre-broadband & fast as I do plenty of huge downloads from Microsoft TechNet etc, and the monthly cost with Eclipse Internet will be around £37 to £40 per month excluding my £3.99 domain costs per month that Eclipse hosts for me as well!

The BT Infinity online chat advised me that can only offer me Infinity from June 30th, 2012, but both kitz http://kitz.co.uk/adsl/adslchecker.php & Sam Knows http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search supply the BT RFS date which is March 1st, 2012, but the BT Infinity site http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProduc... states that Innerleithen will be upgraded upon March 31st, 2012. Why the discrepancy? - That´s BT for you!

Good Lord! £48 per year.

How much web space and email do you get for that, and how much do you use? Is the domain registered in your name with Nominet or theirs?

A .uk domain costs under £4 a year from even expensive dedicated hosts. One of which is mine, where web and mail hosting for 2 domains starts at £15pa.

Hi: With Eclipse Internet I´ve got a 100MB web space with an unlimited e-mail facility for my site which can be increased for a further 250MB at an additional monthly cost of £3.99 per month. By the end of June 2012 - I will have sorted out which way I´d like to go for both my ISP services & for my domain hosting as well!

The further away from any local BT ADSL exchange - prevailing slower down-streams speeds are likely!

Any regularly paid for internet facility upon a monthly basis should be fully useable & not met with any "Sky/BT Traffic Management Policy" hostility restrictions during both on & off peak hours 24/7 down to 256KB/Sec!

I don't condemn Sky Broadband at all, as they are excellent with their Sky+HD & Sky phone + landline packages, but as I only live half a mile away from our local exchange one would expect to get the full 7.5MB/Sec down-stream speeds from Sky Broadband Connect but I didn't get that as I only got those speeds from 0:00 through to 17:00 & during business hours, as Sky had failed to inform me that I could not download say 8.2GB during any day of any given month, & also failed me when I had signed up to them for my Sky Broadband Connect package about as to what I could actually download during any given day (applying those Sky Broadband Connect 1.3GB daily download restrictions for each month with my 40GB monthly allowance that I had at that time), & as Sky were unable to offer their Sky Broadband Unlimited package - so I left Sky fast, where I don't have those hassles anymore.

As with all Sky Broadband Connect accounts - they do allow download usage of up to 40GB per month, but if you download anything over 1.3GB during any day of any given month - you'll be penalized by Sky for doing so! - So that's why I left Sky like a jack rabbit at the end of August 2010 - & went elsewhere where I don't suffer any of these types of down-stream restrictions at all!

I don't use "Sky Broadband Connect/Sky Broadband" for the internet, as I'm not able to receive "Sky Broadband Unlimited" for my BT exchange area, so I now use Eclipse Internet for my ISP services instead, due to these (Sky/BT) 1.3 GB daily down-stream restrictions for their 40 GB monthly policies limit allowance, during any given day/month.

Download Managers are both un-necessary & archaic services!

If you're thinking of using those old "Download Managers" - don't go there as that technology is very old & is not 100% reliable either. We've moved on past those stone age 56K dial-up broadband & "Download Managers" technologies to ADSL broadband & high-speed fibre broadband now. If you do need any large downloads done, do those as single DVD ISO files rather than by splitting these ISO files up using those old "Download Managers" directly from the original downloads source - & not via any "Download Managers" at all!

Only if the Sky Broadband services should prove to be totally useless then do get both a Sky Broadband contract cancellation - (due to the fact that you're not being able/allowed to fully receive your full broadband services that you're paing for) - as well as you should then immediately also get/obtain a Sky Broadband migration key (from Sky Broadband over the phone) & migrate on to any quality internet servive provider as one shouldn't have to pay for services that one can't fully utilize, as I did this & never looked back - as I couldn't cope with any Sky/BT Traffic Management Policies nor any slow down-streams also possibly due to multiple Sky customers at any given times from any BT phone exchanges while doing their huge downloads as I had these problems - so I left Sky Broadband & fast!

That´s why I don´t use either Sky Broadnand Connect nor BT - due to their Sky/BT Traffic Management Policies as I had experienced these in the past - due to the regular usage of my Microsoft TechNet account - downloading various Microsoft products to test them out!

Why the obsession with Internet Explorer aren't these sites written to comply with the open standards of HTML??

Hi: Try Opera http://www.opera.com/index.dml as they are the best! The best browser I had tested out was Opera 11.60 http://www.opera.com/download/ as that works well on Windows 7 Enterprise (x64) - You can also configure the Opera e-mail client facility within the Opera browser as that also works well on Win 7 (x64)

I only tested out the various different Microsoft products upon their various operating system etc, & one would have thought that all these web-sites would be written to fully comply with the open standards of HTML! - Amazon prefer Firefox, http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html so it depends upon the organization in question that hosts their stuff upon any given web-site for web viewing!

As things have got a little off topic, let me return to your connection

You will get a much higher speed as your line length which was probably in the order of 5km to the exchange, will now be the distance to the cabinet. FTTC (Infinity) is also using a new higher speed technology.

Mine went from about 2.4mb to 37.5mb. Well worth it.

I have not actually looked at the BT packages available, but when my neighbour upgraded their monthly charge did not increase on BT, perhaps they were paying too much before. They had all sorts of line problems, which have also gone away since the upgrade.
