Bt infinity bandwith issues

[link to this post]

We live in County Durham and are not very IT savvy. We have had BTInfinity without any issues for 11 months with regular speeds of 35+ Megs. Since the start of December we have not been able to stream ( BBC Iplayer says insufficient bandwith ) or connect to secure web pages and constantly having to refresh pages. To cut an extremely long story short we have had 50 + phone conversations with BT india and 8 seperate open reach engineers who have replaced everything and found NO problem at our end. Speedtest.net cannot complete tests ( the download speed slowly drops to zero ). BT speedchecker shows 36+ megs.
Has anybody encountered this problem and know the solution

What does the speedtester.bt.com say exactly, especially your IP profile?

Sorry took so long to reply but everything takes ages at moment as have to constantly refresh or close down internet explorer
I did a test about 30 mins ago and tried to post results with my original post but had to refresh and lost original post

download
test achieved 30***
IP profile was 36***

upload
test achieved 1400
IP profile 2000

can't remember exact numbers but will redo test when it allows me and post results

If the issue is congestion, rather than some other technical issue then after about 2am and before 9am one would expect things to improve significantly - do they?

Hi smile

Just had a thought, at last. Are you connecting wired or wireless to the Home Hub? If wireless, was that right from the start or just since the trouble?

In the circumstances, it almost certainly won't make any difference, but neither will it do any harm - download TCPOptimizer and let it do its stuff on all connections. Just for safety, if it has an option to save current settings in case anything goes wrong, I always used to click that, but never had to go back.

That seems unlikely , but what you see is what you see. Odd though.
BUT it wont let me apply changes to optimal settings as I dont have administrator priviledges
Get them then.

Easiest is instead of just clicking on it, right-click it and I think it has an option "Run as administrator"?

Do you get the same slow speed regardless of which device you're using?
Can you disconnect all except for one and see if it's still slow?
Have BT got you to do a full reset on the hub? (have they replaced it?)
Have you turned everything off and back on again.... ?
Do you have any neighbours with infinity (or fast broadband)? Do they have issues?

Hi. I have had BT infinity installed 2 weeks ago... Complete rubbish. Just like so many other users the speed is all over the place (normally around 2 - 6 MB download) speedtest result are similarly all over the place depending on which test site you use. The fact is though my broadband performance is actually worse than when I was with Virgin. I am now paying more money for a worse service. Dont get me wrong, BT engineers are very 'helpful' including all of the people at the overseas call centre!! I have now had 4 engineer visits (waiting for number 5 now!) spoken to the call centre about 10 times, new router and wifi hub.
If the speed issues are not sorted very soon I am reporting the whole story to WHICH magazine and cancelling my service because it fails to deliver what its suppose to and they have had ample time to sort it. I appreciate they don't want bad press but lets be honest here - the infrastructure is not fit for purpose - despite the multi-million pound advertisement campaign. Take my advice and DONT swap to BT INFINITY.

So your speeds vary from 16 to 48 Mbps ... whaty is wrong with that? apart from 48 being very unlikely and there is nothing wrong with 16 at peak times.

It may be congestion on your exchange, since even at peak times a speed test gives around 36.x Mbps for me. I am very pleased with Infinity so far (nearly had it a year now) and looking forward to the 80/20 uplift. (depending on cost of course).

That sort of variation seems odd.

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/button/13328... (this site) shows 3.5Mb down - about typical for this site.

A moment later, http://www.speedtest.net/result/1859280603.png shows something approaching the actual speed I get in general web browsing

So why is speed testing on thinkbroadband so useless?
