Campaign to get BT to put FTTC cabinets in areas not chosen

[link to this post]

I have been told that if you obtain enough signatures from residents that BT will put cabinets in areas that they have so far decided not to install them.

I live and run a computer support business in Crowborough (tn63bt) and although the exchange is being upgraded in April and cabinets are appearing nearby, I have been told my area and another area including an industrial park is not due to get FTTC.

Can anybody confirm if this is true and if so what wording to use or example forms available to use etc.

Hi ive just checked you're post code and you are due to get FTTC

NDCRO CROWBOROUGH TN63BT {NDCRO}{P6} 0 100% 18.62 8a Yes FTTC

Only cabs 24/25/27/28/29 have no dates for FTTC.

Industrial estates have not enabled by BT, as it would take away their leased line buinsess ie their 'bread and butter'.

For those cabs not being planned, the residents served by those cabs can register their interest on the BT openreach page.

http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/

On register interest tab.

Since the remaining cabs have been left blank its entirely possible that BT will return and infill later on as this has happened across many exchanges.
Who said to you that you're cab would not be enabled?

Since when was the not enabling of cabinets with businesses attached a policy?

Cabinets serving industrial estates will often have a very low number of lines, making it less economic to spend £30k+ on a full cabinet solution .

The standard industrial estate with a mix of garages, warehouses is probably not going to have any or just a handful of leased lines, and those with them are likely to retain them for the higher SLA and quicker repair times.

Tim,

Someone put the December 2011 cabinet data in to a Google fusion table a while back, you can find it here.

I too have come across the "policy" that BT will not routinely enable industrial estates or business parks with FTTC and they will evaluate each one based on the type of criteria mentioned. Current leased line or ISDN usage, ADSL installations that would be upgraded, telephony usage, various rapid response/care packages. It may not be written as such, or published but there is certainly something in the system.

Common sense really.

If I was running BT I wouldnt roll out FTTC to leased line areas.

The two large towns that have been enabled near to me have not had either of their industrial estates enabled, a person enquired to BT about why and they where reffered to my local CC, who do not know as BT wont say why.

Do you have a source for that cabinet cost?

Is it routine £30k?

yes, BT are leaving our industrial estates. Ours are left out as well. Its causing a lot business anxiety as our industrial estates are on the edge of the urban area and are limited to 2mb speeds or less because of their location.

Costs vary from the low 20k for cabs near to a exchange, about 60k for those further away and finally up to 150k for those quite distant. All depends on distance and how much dutcing is in place, i cannot disclose the exact figures.

you would need to contact openreach to formally ask that quesion

each cab will have a specific cost against it -so needs to be forlmally looked ed

there are anumber of email ways of contacting openreach

Hello

So ... I happen to be in Crowborough as well and trying to work out where my cabinet is in that long list. It is less than 100 meters from my house if I can find it.

Is that a list of all the ones that are getting enabled?

Edit: My house and cabinet in the distance smile http://maps.google.com/maps?q=51.054745,0.15435&ll=5...

So if one had say...
Percent Lines Uplift Phase Deployed FTTC/FTTP
SSSWN..13%....4.35...5a........Yes....FTTC

how does one get the date from the Phase 5a indication
Which I assume means it is planned ... it's just about when...

5a reffers to the phase of the build, their used to be dates tied to each of the phases when the oringinal prodject began. However delays ment that many dates where not being met, so the project shifted to the current situation where area's are enabled as manpower and resources allow, so some places will be further ahead then others.

Phase 5a was last year and should be completed by now, unless their have been problems on you're cab
what is you're full postcode as we can have a look and check. Also once we know you're cab its not to hard to find, then just a check by youreslf to see if the fibre twin is next to it and is humming which shows it live, which it should be.

SN2 2EB : {SSSWN}{P82}
I have checked the normal on line checkers
and they all say no plans for fibre.
51.557592,-1.804675 - seems to be the nearest cabinet (marked 33 in white letters however)
and exchange should be TOOTHILL

You're postcode is split between 2 cabs

SSSWN SWINDON SN22EB {SSSWN}{P82} 0 13% 4.35 5a Yes FTTC

SSTHL TOOTHILL SN22EB {SSTHL}{P33} 0 86%

13 % of the lines in the postcode go to cab 82 on the swindon exchange, which has FTTC, youre cab is number 33 on the Toothill exchange where 86% of the lines go.

As the estate is a new build, they generally dont appear in the first enablement of cabinets, looking at the Toothill exchange the first lot of cabs went live on phase 4a and only a single cab number 23 enabled in phase 6a, both of which were last year.
Roughly on phases 7-8 at current, you may see you're estate cab 33 appear in the next spreadsheet once it appears- likely when the next set of exchange are announced.

http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/wiltshireonline/?page_id...

is Wiltshires superfast broadband campaign be worth contacting them as they may be able to provide a date or give more information about whats happening in swindon etc.

Also you can always organise the residents connected to cab 33 in the new build to all register their interest on OR website, if their is enough support the cabinet will likely be enabled.

many thanks
My guess is that they will wait till Cab 82 is FTTC'd
and then extend that down to 33
The main swindon exchange was FTTC'd later.

The TOOTHILL exchange is technically closer (i.e. better for ADSL)
but is a bit of an oddball connection, as all the surrounding (old) roads and business premises are on the main town center Exchange.

A pity they did not FTTC 33 and extend that to 82 (as there no Virgin media on this new/2005 estate)

Many thanks for the tips.
will go follow up if they have greater insight.

Andy,

I live in St Austell Way SN2 2DQ and using the Dec11 data suggests no FTTC but likely to be on Cabinet 27. I always assumed I was on Cab 33. Where did you get the location coordinates from?. Currently getting 2.5MBs but occassionally 4MBs. Vast improvement over the last 2 months following the moving in of an openreach engineer a few doors down (have had 1.5Mbs for last 2 years)

Desperately hoping for some more cabinet upgrades like they are doing in Rodbourne.

Hi,
if you register (you email will not be visible).. .
you / I can exchange details more easily be PM.

Cabinet location is the street most close to where the property is (apart from teh search in the December spreadsheet)
Unlikely to be another one.
and yes a recent escalation to openreach for one of my lines has also solved also.

Sync was high but throughput was a disaster.
Sync 5Mb/s throughput 0.1 to 0.2Mb/s (allowed to go to ADSL2+)
Sync 3.5Mb/s throughput 2.7 Mbs/ (forced G.DMT/ADSL)
its now way up at 7Mb/s+ sync
after 3 attempts at finding a clean pair.
so yes some cables seem to have a noise source on them.

helps to login first !
reply to this one please

Oh and I know that my Phone No is a TootHill one (88/87 prefix)
not a swindon main one (4x, or 6x)

if you look at any other west swindon Phone No they are all 87/88 leading No's,, town center (Swindon behind the old Woolworths) they are a very different series.
Sainsbury is off the town center ($xxxx)
and the bath road is..

go look on Samknows.com

Hi, assumed I was registered but forgot that forums need to login seperately.

Spoke too soon as last week everything went to pot - noisy phone line, router noise about 30db and virtually no broadband. Openreach engineer did a bit of fiddling outside but nothing major - everything worked for two days then broke again. Different openreach engineer looked at front house connection and found that cable end had rotted (why 1st engineer didn't see this we will never know.) currently 7db, sych 2.5Mbs, 1.3Mbs thinkbroadband speedtest, 250ms traceroute to www-cctld.l.google.com [173.194.67.94]

Engineer did identify location of P27 Toothill -> Fishbrothers opposite Sainsburys (800m following covers (past P33 cabinet which would actually only be 450m from home) . His max test synch speed was 5Mbs so I'll leave it a few days and might get Sky to reset profile. I wonder if I could request to move to a closer cabinet (probably not)

Wonder if driving over the cabinet might get it replaced with a FTTC one.

The suggestion was destroying the existing cabinet would get it replaced with a new FTTC cabinet. However as the FTTC roll out installs an additional cabinet rather than replacing the original, this destructive route isn't an option....
