Could someone offer advice on when I might be getting fiber.

[link to this post]

Hi all,

for 18months now I've been waiting for BT infinity. Every 3 months they bump the availability date another 3 months. I'm on the Pinner exchange which has had fiber available for a while now. I have seen several of the new style cabinets around the area but don't know which one I might be connected to or, if it's not one of those which one it might be. Is there a way to check on this?

My postcode is HA52EL

Thanks for your help.

That postcode is supplied from PCP (phone) cabinet 70. So you are looking for an FTTC cabinet clearly associated with it.

I would have thought it would be live by now, as it is/was scheduled for Phase 5a. Sounds like technical or planning trouble.

What exactly does this checker say about fibre for your munber?

Thanks for that, do you know how I might go and find that particular cabinet so I can see if it's a new one and if it appears to be powered up? putting my number into the broadband checker give the following:

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 4Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 2.5Mbps and 7Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 5Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 3Mbps and 7.5Mbps.

Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC by 31st March 2012. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 40Mbps and upstream line speed of 10Mbps.

All lines for the following post codes are served by the same cab as you. You can use htttp://batchgeo.com
to plot each of these post codes onto a google map. This should then give you a good indication of the geographic area in which the cab is located. You can then either go for a walk or use google street maps to find it.

There's some cabs at the end of "Field End Road" which look strange on Street View - I'm guessing its a VM cab in front on the pavement, but there is something behind it; in a darker green that could be a BT PCP.

Well the 31st of March came and went and lo, BT changed the date to 30th June. Colour me not surprised.

I went and looked at the local cabinets and this is what I found. The old cabinet

the old cabinet

and a new cabinet

Does the new cabinet look like the correct one for the fiber connections? I could hear no noise and feel no warmth so don't know if it means it's up and running or not. There were no markings on it but they're the only cabinets anywhere near our road, I walked up all the other roads nearby and couldn't find anything else so I'm guessing they're the correct ones.

Annoyingly, my girlfriend's parents were connected to infinity this week, they live 4 miles up the road and are now getting 27Mbps. I may have to go and live in their attic for a while.

The first cabinet looks like a VM cabinet or something else, the second cabinet could possibly be BT though not sure, neither look like the normal BT cabs you would expect to find.

Edit just had a look around and those 2 cabs you link to are for a mobile mast that is to the right of them.

Just found this on the exit of your estate to the main road, could possibly be the cab.

They both look like cable cabs.

borrowing creakycoperline's photo here.

The one on the right is an FFTC cabinet, although there are two sizes.

Edit:

Here's a map of the postcodes served by your cabinet.

http://batchgeo.com/map/133db18f7f74a04fc318b1b591b3...

The one cxxo linked to does indeed look like a likely candidate to be P70, junction of Azelea Walk & High Road Eastcote

Thanks guys, it looks like the one at the end of our road is definitely an old one then, I'll just have to wait until they change the cab out, gutted that it's taken so long, at least I'll now have a good idea of when we'll be getting fiber when they change that cabinet out.

Cheers.

They dont "change the cabinet out" - they add an extra one which has the fibre kit in and is linked to the original one.

You need to look for a new CAB which will be near to the original one but could be across the road, road the corner or otherwise hidden.

There may be a trench from the original CAB - follow that!

Is the cabinet ccxo gave a link to cabinet 70?

Re what greenglide said about not swapping the cabinet out, a page about how it is done.

If he looks closely the number may be marked in chalk or spray paint, but a lot of ours don't even have the numbers on.

From the map I posted earlier it looks quite likely it is his cabinet.

Went and checked the cabinet and it has 70 painted on it, doesn't appear to be another cabinet within quarter of a mile other than the ones next to the mobile phone antenna that I posted earlier. Guess it'll be a long wait.
