After advice from the Forum my Fibre with Plusnet went live this morning!
I might re-organise my office as the socket is in one corner and my desk/modem/router is in the other.
My question is .....
I have to extend the modem cable about 12 foot [as I did before] but is it better to have the extension cable before or after the modem or does it not matter?
BT enginner said I'm getting 40MB/2MB at the socket but only 29MB/1.7MB at my PC so will shortening the cable from socket to modem/router make any difference?
I have a resonable quality cable which just lays on the floor around edge of room.
Thanks

BT enginner said I'm getting 40MB/2MB at the socket but only 29MB/1.7MB at my PC Can't see anything other than the cable being the cause, if this is true, unless one is a sync speed and the other a speedtest result.
Always best to have the shortest xDSL cable and a longer network cable.

Keep modem close to its socket, and the router can be 100m away using Ethernet cable

If a "sync speed" is engineer's little gadget which text him the results then yes and I did a speedtest on Think Broadband

So your saying shortest cable before modem and longer yellow ethernet cables? just to be sure

Thank you Mr Saffron too

Yes, but the ethernet cables can be any colour, they don't have to be yellow.
James - be* pro - on THFB - sync about 17.2mbps - BQM

I think you'll find the yellow ones work better.

As MrSaffron and jchamier say, have the modem near the phone socket with the short cable "phone" cabler connecting it, and then get a suitable length of ethernet cable, (ready made up), in any colour you like. Grey is most common, but for example see here.
I hope boxst was joking . Ignore the "yellow better" remark.

Further to this, like most people I have my modem connected to the phone socket via the bog-standard flat cable provided, about 1.5m long. Does anyone, anywhere think there is any mileage in replacing this with some super-screened premium variety or is this just another con like premium HDMI cables? Might this squeeze a fraction more out of the sync speed?

Decent twisted pair RJ11 leads can be had for £2 to 3, paying any more is a distinct waste
Personally unless you are experiencing resyncs then I'd not worry, the short lead will be fine for 99.9% of lines
