BT HomeHub3 - Do I HAVE to use it?

Having switched over to Infinity this week, I've obviously ditched my ADSL router (Linksys WAG320), and started using the HomeHub3.

I have 6 IP cameeras on my internal network, and for some reason I just can't figure out (after 4 days trying) 2 of those cameras seem to keep getting blocked by the router. They have worked fine for the last couple of years with my existing setup, but each morning I get up, 2 of them are now not getting through the firewall. I spend 10 minutes each morning, re-doing the port forwarding, and then they work again, but I'm repeating it every day.

So, what I'd like to know is, can a different cable router be used, or do i HAVE to use the HomeHub3?

Short answer, no you don't. Although you may want to wait a few days to be registered into the BT Fon/Openzone network, if you intend to use that when out and about.

BTFon is already working now, I've tried that, though, I'm not sure how much, if it all I would use it.

So, really, just pick a cable router that I like, and take it from there?

Provided it is a Gigabyte external WAN input as 80Mb/s is really too fast for 100BaseT ethernet!

Infinity is just the name for BT Retail's product using Openreach FTTC. Just like Total Broadband is their name for ADSLx.

There are many more ISPs offering their own products using the same FTTC, again just as on ADSLx. Some are listed here.

On ADSLx the only companies supplying the Home Hub is BT Retail. The same applies on FTTC. I started with IDNet and have now moved to Plusnet. Buffalo and Netgear routers.

Not having had a Home Hub, I'm not sure if the common solution to your sort of problem is possible, but I would hope so. This is to disable DHCP on Linksys, change its default LAN IP address to one high up in the range used by the HH, connect the two through the LAN ports, and continue as you were before with your cameras fed off the Linksys.

I'm sure there will be several here later who can advise on the detail. Or say it has been tried and can't be done.

Looking at the specs I would say yes it is suitable.

If you are looking for any suggestions I can recommend the ASUS RT-N56u, I have been using mine for 3 months now and it has been excellent.

I'm quite keen on sticking with a fairly high-end Linksys if I can, as the WAG320N has been faultless for me in the time I've had it, and my cameras have all worked well without any messing about needed.

FYI your username and password will be:

Username:[email protected]
Password : <Blank> , a space or a value.

For the password you will need to try a combination as some routers don't accept the field being set as blank.
