Problem hacking HG612 modem

[link to this post]

Hi, I've tried to follow the instructions here http://huaweihg612hacking.files.wordpress.com/2011/1... but I'm not having any joy connecting to the modem's webpage.

These are my PC's settings:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 48-5B-39-14-51-4A
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::56f:c10:6b78:73a7%10(Preferred)
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.100(Preferred)
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . : 239622969
DHCPv6 Client DUID. . . . . . . . : 00-01-00-01-13-57-E4-D4-48-5B-39-14-51-4A

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1
fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1
fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1
NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled

LAN2 on the modem is lit up, but I can't access the webpage or ping the 192.168.1.1 address.

I have a feeling it's just windows 7 being an pain, I love this version apart from the networking which I've always had problems with, give me XP's networking any day tongue

The modem needs to be plugged into the master phone socket.

Do you connect to your router wirelessly? If so, disconnect the wireless.

It is, though even if it wasn't surely this wouldn't effect the ability to connect via network to it?

No, my pc doesn't have wireless, I only connect directly via ethernet cable.

Well, it worked for me. You could try turning ipv6 off on the PC network connectoid.
Are you resetting the modem like the instructions say?

No it doesn't, I hacked mine with it sat on the desk and just an Ethernet cable between the modem and the laptop, oh and of course the power plugged in smile

Don't think I set the default gateway to anything when I changed my laptops network settings, perhaps thats your problem.

Are you also sure your holding the reset button long enough when connecting the power?

Also presume it hasn't been hacked before, ie new one not one from ebay?

Default gateway wasn't set to anything at first, I only put 192.168.1.1 afterwards when I was trying different things to fix it.

Pretty sure I'm holding it in long enough, though it's not exactly a great reset button - there's no click or anything to let you know it's actually activated.

Brand new modem, installed by BT last week.

My work laptop is XP, think I'll bring that home tomorrow and try with that instead.

The laptop I used was Windows 7 Home, can't see it being that.

Hi,

I had the same issue when I flashed mine. I had to enter 192.168.1.1 into the DNS on the Network card properties to get it to browse to the modems web page. smile

Win 7 Home Premium on a laptop, didn't have a problem.

You are powering off the modem at the start, and pressing/holding the button before connecting the power? If you have power on before pressing the button it just does a standard reset to factory defaults. Pressing and holding the button, then connecting the power without releasing the button until lights start flashing, goes into firmware update mode, which is where you want to be.

I had the above issue with my 2nd modem. I eventually removed the circuit board from the casing in order to reliably RESET the modem.

It's easy to test the RESET function as follows;

Press and hold the RESET button. After approx 5 seconds, the 'POWER' LED should flash once.
Release the RESET button. After approx 5 seconds, the modem should reboot.
Test complete!

Now proceed to the flashing instructions, but remember the following DOs & DON'Ts;

DON'T (NEVER) repeatedly RESET your modem whilst connected to the telephone line - You'll incur the wrath of the DLM.
DO disconnect the modem from the telephone line before attempting to flash.
DON'T use the same browser session you used in a previous unsuccessful flashing attempt.
DO (ALWAYS) open a new browser session when attempting to flash for each attempt.

Good Luck!

I know it sounds silly but is it the huawei unit?. Only the eci unit does look very similar and mistakes can be made (guess how I found out).

I had no problems initiating the update but it didn't achieve anything. The modem rebooted and I was still locked out. I was going to have another go last weekend but didn't have time.

Andrue, did you use the unlocked version of the firmware, or just unknowingly reflash the original?

The unlocked version actually has unlocked002 in the filename.

Edit: The link to the unlocked firmware links to a ZIP file which contains 3 files, the PDF instructions, the original firmware, and the unlocked firmware.

It's nice to see that Asbokid has clarified this in a June 9 update to the wiki, probably after my confusion smile

But alas there will still be some confusion because there are two links on the Wiki, one for the unlocked firmware and one for the original firmware, this implies that each download contains what the link states, but the unlocked one also contains the original firmware.

99% certain it was the unlocked one. I remember wondering about that at the time and I remembered that the name of the selected file ended with 002.

There is a possibility that I interrupted the upload when I turned wireless off on my laptop. It couldn't have been using that for the upload because my router wasn't connected to the modem. However I had enabled it in order to copy the files locally from my server then while I was waiting I disabled it to avoid forgetting it later. Perhaps that glitched the wired connection.

Another possibility is an incompatibility with Google Chrome but that seems unlikely.

Either way I left the room for ten minutes and when I came back the modem had rebooted but I couldn't get to the modem's configuration screen.
