IP profile 75/20 - Actual after 4 days = 65/1.5!

[link to this post]

Hi there, me again.

So after a few days, my upload has decreased massively. I was getting 14 - 16 now its reduced to 1.5~

I took the bt tester and it said my line is set for 75/20 so I'm confused.

I have nothing in the background uploading.

Also, as an enthusiast, that last 5mbps on the download is of interest.
How can I go about getting the full 80mbps profile?

Cool, in that case I recommend you load the hacked firmware to be able to see your line statistics.

Thank you, just updating the firmware has put the upload back to what it was.

Now need to figure out how to do some line tests!

I understood the hacking firmware gave access to stats, and allowed removal of QoS. The first would make no difference to upload speed (though it might help diagnose faults that would eventually improve things), and the second a small amount.

It may have been restarting the modem after the update and therefore resynching, or some other thing that got you speed back. Anyway, excellent it is back.

Again today my speeds are all over the place.

32mbs down and .85 up

Is this something to do with the 10 day line testing that was mentioned to me by BT, or a more serious problem?

Once you have the modem unlocked, and assuming you have made it and the router be on the same subnet, (make sure you give it a fixed IP address way out of the way), you can access it normally using its IP address, by connecting LAN2 to a router LAN port. I can get the modem GUI and also telnet in for full stats by wireless to my router. The logging/graphing is running that way as well.

I managed to get telnet working etc, I must admit, I don't really know what many of these numbers mean.

Would anyone mind explaining?

Thanks RobertoS, I set it to .100 like the guide suggested. So I don't need to DC the house smile

EDIT: My connection has been quite slow all day now. Upload is woeful. Down is erratic

The 10 day line testing only applies to ADSL. DLM on fibre run continuously.

Download/upload connection speeds are 63874/19000kbps.

I'm not sure you understood me. The way I have it wired I don't need to mess around. LAN2 goes to the router not to the computer, so no need to faff around.

So if I plug lan2 into a 2nd router port, how do I set the IP specifically on the modem so when I go through the router with telnet it knows to look at the modem? If that makes sense.
I am pretty green as you can probably tell.

So why is the down set to 63874 when I am on the 80/20 service?

This also doesn't explain then why the up inexplicably plummets.

Day 1 - 3 I was getting a consistent 75mbps down and 16mbps up with a ping of around 7-14ms.

Now its 60/16/25ms tho most of the day its been 0.8 on the upload.

I suspect they're throttling your connectiion using the BTAgent listening on Port 161.

You may be able to change the firewall setting to stop this.

I don't know the BT Home Hub, but I would think with what you have now if you just connect like you say - LAN2 >> any router LAN port, that if you enter 192.168.1.1 in the URL bar you will get the modem login page.

Try it and see smile. Don't mess about if you don't!

Re the down speed, it seems odd that you aren't connected at nearly 80,000kbps. At the moment I haven't got an answer to that.

I shall give BT technical dept a call tomorrow morning and hope I get someone from the UK.

I was prepared to forgive 5mbps off the down, but not nearly 20 when I know I should be getting the full speed at this distance from the cab

Have a look in the event log, you may notice some entries for tr069.

When I fu'd what you mentioned, it became apparent this is not for a novice to try to sort out. Though I am perhaps one up from a novice, I am not confident.
I wasn't even sure what telnet was and its disabled as standard in windows 7, which again suggests this is beyond the remit of a reasonably ITK user.

The BT homehub point blank does not work now, the B light stays orange.

The upload consistently is around or below 1mbps, if you say that too is because of this btagent, then I wonder quite how anyone gets the speeds quoted.

I just did a telnet check again, numbers have changed.. my upload is now a reasonable 16997 but I promise you in a hour or 2 it will be back to 01xxx~

BusyBox v1.9.1 (2010-10-15 17:59:06 CST) built-in shell (ash)

No need to use telnet to do this, you can browse to the user interface on the modem at 192.168.1.1
userid/password is admin/admin
On the menu on the left you can see advanced setting and under this is firewall.
You may see the current setting is BT. Change this to something else, say standard.
and reboot.

Thanks for your patience with me batboy.

I just checked and firewall 'standard' was already set on the router, which I hadn't changed previously.

I just tried 'low', 'bt' and 'disabled' all with the same result to speed. (Still horrendously low upload)

My path speed in telnet is the same as mentioned earlier at all those settings.

I have now put the locked sp10 firmware on and the homehub now works, which has also put the upload to something like the path speed (sync speed).

I am left in a quandary. Is my RT-N56U something to do with this?

How can I get the sync speeds back up to what they were on first installation, and why did they fall in the first place?

Quite possibly!

You should try using the supplied Home Hub for a few days.

To further isolate the cause of the problem, you could also try reconfiguring the Huawei HG612 as a router.
I believe that Batboy has successfully tried this...

Ok, thanks for trying that. I'll recheck my settings at the weekend, as it appears I may have been mistaken about what I actually ended up with.

It does sounds like your line is being actively managed or it may really be as a result of a fault which will need an engineer to resolve. But I agree you're better off running the HH3 at least until the connection settles down. One thing that is happening is a roll-out of a firmware upgrade on the HH3 to bring it up to sp12.

One think you can do on the HH3 is to keep an eye on the event log for signs of management entries.

There is another thing you can try on the modem using the unlocked firmware, and again I'll recheck that at the weekend too.

I was wrong about the firewall setting, it's set to standard anyway so no need to change it unless you want to. I'm a bit puzzled by there being an entry called BT in the list.
What I was trying to do was to close the open port 161 shown on shields-up at grc.com. I'm not sure exactly what I did to close it, but the other thing I tried was to remove vlan 301.
I did this by logging into the modem and going to Basic>WAN. There are 2 rows at the top for PTM 301 and PTM 101.
Selecting PTM 301, which is named TR069_Internet, and unticking Wan Connection: enable. Then pressing Submit at the bottom RH.
Also, while I was there I went to Advanced>QOS and unticked the enable flag.
In addition, I don't use the HH3.
