BT Infinity or Sky Fibre for a VPN user

I work from home using a VPN connection to the office and I'm looking to get either BT Infinity 2 or Sky Fibre Unlimited. I was wondering if anyone could recommend if either of these are better with a VPN?

By its very nature VPN traffic is "hidden" from the ISP so the VPN traffic should not make any difference to the choice.

Of course both BT and SKY will have a "small" amount of VPN traffic used to hide P2P usage. SKY allow P2P without shaping, BT do not.

But at price, availability and make a choice. If you are already on SKY it seems logical to stay with them, same is probably true with BT.

I work from home occasionally and the company I work for use Cisco AnyConnect which works fine over Sky fibre. Previously we used a setup from Juniper which was fine on Sky Broadband but on Sky Fibre it started to drop the connection quite a bit.

Use of Sky for any commercial or business purpose is NOT permitted.

So, you have a choice of one.

I doubt that client vpn would come under business or commercial.

Might be worth checking with them. Be say the same thing in their T&C but don't count 'working from home'.

Not according to many ISPs. It needs clarification but to many ISPs if you work for a large corporate and then work from home that is "home use" but if you run a small business from your home address that is "business use."

I know LOADS of people who home work using Sky as their ISP.

They are all breaking the TnCs.

But are Sky going to do anything about it? Probably not. Those T&C's are more likely in there so that someone cannot claim to Sky that any "downtime" or whatever is affecting their "business".

There is no way they can stop anyone using it for resi or bus use.

I use Sky to VPN into work lots. When I connect to works VPN I can leave it on for 10+ hours at a time as I forget to disconnect from it.

Never had any issues. If it breaks T&Cs fair play but I don't see Sky monitoring it actively.

Yeah. That and (perhaps) relating to interpretation of the contract under consumer law.

Last year the dishwasher in our office kitchen failed and we discovered that we weren't covered by the manufacturer's guarantee because it was a business purchase and that the T&C excluded cover for business use.

Thanks for all the feedback. The business use issue would appear to apply to both.

From Sky T&Cs
"Sky Broadband is for private use by you and members of your household only. It must not be used for any commercial or business purpose."

From BT T&Cs
"The services and equipment we provide to you under these terms must not be used for business purposes."

I'm sure they're just covering themselves so a customer can't claim compensation if the service does an O2.

BT has a Business service whereas Sky does not.

BT Business has very god response times for faults - guaranteed throughput minimums, UK customer service ...

Also worth pointing out that price isn't an issue for me as work will cover the cost. The main reason for considering Sky is that I'd love to ditch BT. I hate talking to their call centres and they've just disabled my online billing - to enable it I need my account number which I don't have as I've always done everything online and I've been waiting 10 days and counting for them to post me my account number.

If work is paying, you should also consider the more upmarket providers such as Zen and AAISP. They have much better reputation for support. They tend to get very pricey if you use significant amounts of data, though.

BT Infinity for Business is unlimited for an extra £5

With work covering the cost then go for BT Business. Fully unlimited and with a single Fixed IP included.

Your employer will be able to reclaim the VAT paid, whereas with a residential service it can be a problem and if your employer is happy to do it, the cost can be added to the company account rather than you pay and reclaim. Cleaner all round.

One advantage is the response time for a fault - if your line breaks, then for residential it could be several days, but because your business broadband is over that same line, it will normally be next day.

In theory the employer needs an invoice billed directly to them to claim VAT back.

HMRC would count the provision of an internet connection as a taxable benefit if there was any private use.

They never have in my experience. From provision of ISDN 2e / Highway services in the 90's moving to ADSL in 2000. And we had large numbers of staff with connections provided. The proviso being was that the person is "Home Based" or works from home a majority of their time. Provision of a connection for someone who will use it for work purposes for just a few minutes each day can be considered a benefit in kind.
