ptm1.301

[link to this post]

Has anybody using an unlocked modem that ptm1.301 is now connected all of a sudden?

Historically this has alway been in a state of 'connecting'

This connection seems to have its own IP address. A bit concerning, what on earth is it doing?

I dont have logs enabled, will try and start them going now.

Found a couple of other bits relating to this, seems im not the only person for which this is now happening.

Just been reading this...

Yep, one of the IPs (the source IP) in the log is an internal nonroutable IP address. BTs SNMP querying servers are in this range.

The IP address that the VDSL modem has assigned by DHCP on its BT management interface is a routable 30.X IP address!

Connection Name IP Address Subnet Mask Default Gateway
ptm1.301 30.119.X.X 255.255.248.0 30.119.X.X

Why would BT be assigning a routable (and not even owned by them!) address to VDSL modems? Seems more sensible to be using (as you note) the local private IP addresses for their CPE management network IPs.

I realise that its unlikely to cause problems to the end user as the modem is just bridged and cant usurp traffic to that subnet.. but from a technical point of view it seems a bit weird.

In reply to a post by simon194:
From the latest updated version of SIN498 in the "CP provided modem" section (the up and coming self-install option):

"CPs or their EUs will be responsible for maintaining the firmware of their Modems and monitoring their connectivity and performance, typically via a TR-69 interface using CPE WAN Management Protocol (CWMP)."

From my thread earlier. Makes sense after reading the SIN498 too. It seems ptm1.301 is now alive. Just ironic how I lost a lot of speed at the same time as ptm1.301 being connected, but unlikely to cause that.

Why is it unlikely?

Well, I couldn't see how ptm1.301 suddenly being enabled could cause nearly 6dB loss of noise margin, perhaps it did? If it did then it's extremely annoying. I suppose the best way to determine that would be to disconnect ptm1.301 and disable it?

According to http://whois.arin.net the 30.xxx.xxx.xxx range to which the ptm1.301 connections are going is:

OrgName: DoD Network Information Center
OrgId: DNIC
Address: 3990 E. Broad Street
City: Columbus
StateProv: OH

Yes, I noticed that. I'm wondering if the IP on ptm1.301 is internal to BT though.

Probably is, though it seems odd to use a non-reserved address it it is. Partly put the post in to see if it triggered any spy paranoia reaction.

I don't think this is new - I know that my modem has had this interface and it has been connected since day one of having FTTC.

Here's a screenshot I took of my modem's stats way back in early January. I was the second customer (and first residential customer apparently) to be connected to the cabinet on a very newly enabled exchange. http://i.imgur.com/4AXbk.png

You can see that it is definitely connected and has a 30.xx IP. I don't really remember (I'm not in a position to check my modem) but I seem to remember it saying something to do with management somewhere, but I'm not really sure.

If it is definitely new for some people, maybe it is a change BT has implemented in new builds for a while now and is only just implementing it in older exchanges?

Actually, here's another screenshot I have (I must have taken screenshots of various menus for some reason).

http://i.imgur.com/d3p6O.png - it says TR069_INTERNET for the description. TR069 appears to be a protocol for managing CPE devices - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TR-069
