Self installed fibre cables to farm

My friend lives on a farm near Stannington, Sheffield. The farm is 7.5 km from the Ranmoor exchange so broadband speeds are very poor. The nearest built up area is approx 2km away and is fortunate to be served by a Digial Region fibre cabinet. Digital Region say the postcode is covered but the cant provide a service to the phone number as it may be an exchange only line. From the extreme edge of the farm you are within 600 metre of the Digital Region box.

In theory if we ran our own fibre across the farm we could get to the said location within 600 metres of the cabinet, but then how would we connect to the service?

If there was power at the side of the field we could enclose a router in a weather proof box but this is not the case.

Any sugestions?

Find someone in a house that borders the land and run fibre to that.

Obviously the resident at that house will have to be willing to host a phone line for you and have their garden dug up to get the fibre there.

If you cross someone else's land you'll need a way leave.

If the topography allows it, you may be better off with a UHF or microwave link from your premises to a willing host for the internet connection at the other end. No power issues and no digging! There are number of companies around who can do this.

Contact them, and ask for a survey, saying you are willing to dig in your own duct across the land you they own to a point they specify.

This would seem to be a good solution, using aerials something like these:

You'd need line of sight from a willing customer on the fibre network to a point on your farm that you can run an ethernet cable to (the aerials use power over ethernet, so no need for a separate power cable). The speeds are up to 150Mbps which should be plenty fast enough!

If they are running fibre from the premises to the edge of the farm, surely also running a mains cable is easy?

First hurdle is that you need a telephone line for the digital region service to connect to, and within reasonable VDSL2 distance. 600m over copper for VDSL is not mega fast but probably a lot better than what you have no.

So its all about power supply where you hand over the service.

I think getting the line to the within distance of the farm is going to be the main problem. If there is no property within easy distance to install a line then any line install would be classified as non served premises and thus be liable for installation costs including network construction.
